Just Sayin' . . . Holiday Weekend Edition

What we're looking for the rest of July . . . and what we saw over the weekend of the Fourth -- some thoughts and questions.

Three-day holiday and plenty of time to think and ask and wonder and maybe even snark a bit. Time for some sayin' and askin'.

*** For a Trojan football team getting back in gear Monday on a five-day-a-week regimen and now that it's July and we're getting a chance to talk to the players, we do have some questions to ask them . . . Just Sayin'.

*** For starters: How much do you weigh? For the big guys trending down [Damien Mama, Zach Banner (he says he'll tell us) and Jordan Simmons] and the lean guys trending up [Max Tuerk, Toa Lobendahn, Quinton Powell and Chad Wheeler], this stuff matters. As it does for a leaner, meaner Cody Kessler . . . Just Sayin'.

*** Player we're most looking forward to watchng in person this week -- Oklahoma transfer Taylor McNamara, who hasn't been on the field yet. Tight end is a position you just have to see guys -- how big they are and how well they move through space. Numbers don't do it. You have to see them . . . Just Sayin'.

*** OK, one more we didn't really see get to do much his one appearance last week -- Ronald Jones II. Looking to see him move with the ball in his hands and compare him to the other freshman running backs -- Dominic Davis and Aca'cedric Ware . You just have to see that with your own eyes . . Just Sayin'.

*** In general, what you're looking for this month are the players who have to be on the field. They'll tell us. Or show us. You'll know them when you see them. Who's this year's Buck Allen? . . . Just Askin'.

*** Off topic, how about the NCAA investigators showing up in Oxford, Miss., over the weekend and not for the fireworks. Although the thought of the NCAA actually investigating an SEC team is like wondering what it will be like when USC wins an NCAA men's basketball title. Just wishful thinking . . . Just Sayin'.

*** So what's the next sound in an SEC town when you hear someone say, "I'm from the NCAA and I'm here to investigate you."? Laughter . . . Just Sayin'.

*** Or maybe you're at UNC, not USC, and when the NCAA guys show up in Chapel Hill, you know they're there to get you out of trouble not into it. They really are working with you. They're trying to help and you know they are . . . Just Sayin'.

*** Don't believe me, believe UNC coaches Roy Williams and Larry Fedora, as some of their recruits apparently are, that despite the majority of the couple of thousand UNC athletes benefitting over the two decades of fake courses having been football and basketball players, neither of those programs are charged with violations -- and they're right. The NCAA has already let them slide . . . Just Sayin'.

*** But also off topic, could there have been a better way to pass the time than watching the USA Women's World Cup team get all offensive? . . . Just Askin'.

*** As for the other football, we'll say this: We've always felt soccer works better for the women. The field fits their game. Enough room to play offense if you want to and Sunday, they wanted to . . . Just Sayin'.

*** And as much as we loved all that scoring for a fired-up good old USA group in their lovely black and Nike Volt (the yellow-green color) colors on this Fourth of July weekend, we're probably never going to feel right rooting for Nike colors over USA colors although it had to make Phil Knight feel awfully good . . . Just Sayin'.

*** Wondering about the disconnect between those USA fans in Vancouver painting their faces red, white and blue. Hadn't they heard those patriotic colors are so passe.' Who buys red, white and blue shoes? . . . Just Askin'.

*** Might be as good an argument as anyone could make to NOT fiddle with a team's classic uniform look. I mean, where do you stop ? No red or blue except in the little patch and grey and gold warmups? . . . Just Askin'.

*** Here's our general thought about that: Never trust Nike. Remember USC's Ronald McDonald shoes. Unless you're the Oregon Ducks, this stuff only works for Nike, not the Nike team . . . Just Sayin'.

*** Just one more thought here: No, we're not calling for hat-tricker Carli Lloyd for president but as some have suggested, if you're going to put a woman on the $20 bill, Carli would work just fine there . . . Just Sayin'.

*** On the flip side, would it be right to say Hope Solo, with her legal/domestic violence issues, is lucky she's not in the NFL? Not as lucky as to be playing behind this mostly mistake-free USA defense -- and against these offenses but still, awfully fortunate to have this chance here. At least she was wearing cardinal and gold . . . Just Askin'.
