The Trojans held what was scheduled to be a normal football practice on Sunday afternoon, with the workout open to the media and only head coach Steve Sarkisian available to speak after practice. Soon after arriving at practice, the USCFootball.com staff noticed that head coach Steve Sarkisian was not anywhere on the USC practice field.
Towards the end of practice the media was told by USC sports information that "someone" would be addressing the situation after practice. We were directed to the sports information office where we waited for about 45 minutes before SID Tim Tessalone brought us to a meeting room close by. Soon after, USC athletic director Pat Haden and offensive coordinator Clay Helton entered the room and each made a brief statement. Neither Haden or Helton would take questions. You can see the full video of what they had to say here.
What we learned was that Pat Haden had called Sarkisian earlier Sunday and quickly determined that he was "not healthy" and then he asked Sarkisian to take an indefinite leave of absence. Haden also announced that Clay Helton would take over as USC's interim head coach as the team gets ready for a tough road trip to Notre Dame this weekend.
