USC-Arizona participation breakdown charts

As has been the theme in recent weeks, USC unveiled some new looks and rotations before settling back into their base packages. See how that affected snap counts for each USC player against the Wildcats.

Couple of quick notes to go with this week's participation breakdown charts:

- Players that returned from injury after missing/leaving the Cal game: Claude Pelon, Juju Smith-Schuster.

- Players that did not dress and were out with injuries to begin the Arizona game: Jonathan Lockett, Leon McQuay III, Toa Lobendahn, Marvell Tell III, John Houston Jr., Max Tuerk, Isaac Whitney, Christian Tober, Jordan Simmons.

- Players that were injured and did not finish the Arizona game: Zach Banner.

- Uchenna Nwosu made his first career start as the Trojans started out in a unique look that featured three cornerbacks (Adoree Jackson, Kevon Seymour and Iman Marshall) starting and Nwosu beginning at rush end, though he played wide quite a bit. The cornerbacks started beside Chris Hawkins, who was the only safety on the field. Instead with Nwosu on the field, the Trojans used Su'a Cravens and Jackson at safety at different points.

- USC eventually scrapped their early looks in favor of their base defense. That meant less playing time for Uchenna Nwosu. After playing 15 defensive snaps in the first quarter and seven in the second quarter (Su'a Cravens also had to go into the locker room in between quarters to get stitches.), Nwosu didn't get back on the field for defense.

- With Nwosu starting at rush end, you would expect the snap counts of Scott Felix and Porter Gustin to see drastic declines, but finished right around his season average and Gustin actually set a career high with 49 defensive snaps.

- Freshman tight end Tyler Petite also got his first career start. USC began their first offensive sequence in a two-tight end set.

- When Zach Banner got dinged up and didn't return to the game after an extra point attempt after the first play of the fourth quarter, Chuma Edoga took over in Banner's spot for the final two extra points. It was Edoga's first two special teams plays of his career.

- Adoree' Jackson stayed on defense for the second week in a row and played 71 of his 96 total plays on the defensive side. He was on offense for only eight plays.

- Cameron Smith and Anthony Sarao returned to the starting lineup after beginning the Cal game on the sideline with USC utilizing a nickel package. The entire linebacker group saw increased snap counts. Sarao tied his season high with 35 defensive snaps while Smith had the most he's had in over a month. Lamar Dawson played a season-high 47 snaps after only getting 19 last week.

- Linebackers coach Peter Sirmon actually mixed up his linebacker rotations this week. At various points, Cam Smith played with all three of the other middle linebackers, but more unique was the pairing of Lamar Dawson and Anthony Sarao together, which Sirmon used on three different drives.

- After not playing any defensive snaps, John Plattenburg stepped back into the safety spot vacated with Leon McQuay III out with an injury. Plattenburg played a season-high 64 defensive snaps. Cody Temple also returned to defensive action, getting four snaps on that side of the ball after not playing defensively against Cal. It was the opposite for Jabari Ruffin, who did not play on defense against Arizona.

- Another player getting another shot at some defensive snaps was Osa Masina, who got 17 defensive reps after having just three against Utah and not playing on defense against Cal.

- Reuben Peters returned to kickoff return coverage in place of Taylor McNamara. Dominic Davis took Leon McQuay III's spot on the coverage unit. Due to JuJu Smith-Schuster's broken hand, Justin Davis was the secondary kick returner.

- Joel Foy took the place of injured Leon McQuay III on punt returns.

- No defender played every snap. Chris Hawkins played all but one defensive play. Coincidentally, the one play he missed? John Plattenburg's momentum-shifting interception.

- On offense, Cody Kessler and offensive linemen Khaliel Rodgers and Chad Wheeler played all 76 offensive snaps. However, no one came close to the 96 total plays that Adoree' Jackson participated in. The next closest total play count was Hawkins at 81 total snaps.

- With Tre Madden not playing much, Ronald Jones III took on a much bigger role and played a career-high 37 offensive snaps -- 13 more than his previous high. It was imperative for him to be able to be in the game when he wasn't getting the ball to give the defense a different look and he was used as a decoy often against Arizona. He carried the ball 19 times on 37 snaps, so basically half of the time.

- While offensive stars Ronald Jones II and JuJu Smith-Shuster put up very good yards per play numbers with 7.8 and 7.6 ypp, respectively, there was one other offensive player above seven yards per play and his numbers exceeded either of theirs. The Trojans gained 446 yards during the 55 plays receiver De'Quan Hampton was on the field -- 8.1 yards per play. He wasn't around for the negative plays, participating in only two of USC's seven plays that lost yardage.

- On the defensive side, who were the top players in terms of yards per play? When Rasheem Green was on the field, Arizona averaged just 4.1 yards, managing just 91 yards in 22 plays. Fellow freshman Noah Jefferson (4.5) was one of five players below five yards per play along with Su'a Cravens (4.6), Scott Felix (4.8) and Lamar Dawson (4.8).

- The biggest loss of the night was a -16 yard fumble recovery by Arizona on Tre Madden's only potential rushing attempt. Cody Kessler was charged with the fumble and the negative yardage, but Madden was the one who wore it. After that play, he participated in only two more plays. A failed third down pass attempt in the red zone and USC's onside kick recovery unit on the next to last play of the game.

- And lastly, it was great to see Claude Pelon return and go full blast. He played 30 defensive snaps.
