USC-Stanford participation breakdown charts

Playing against the slower tempo of Stanford, USC relied much more on its starters on both sides of the ball. See who played, how many snaps and who was on the field when the Trojans were most effective.

Couple of quick notes to go with this week's participation breakdown charts:

- Players that returned from injury after missing/leaving the UCLA game: Viane Talamaivao and Steven Mitchell Jr.

- Players that were out with injuries to begin the Stanford game: Khaliel Rodgers, Jonathan Lockett, Osa Masina, Cameron Smith, Lamar Dawson, Leon McQuay III, Matt Lopes, Toa Lobendahn, John Houston Jr., Max Tuerk, Isaac Whitney, Christian Tober and Jordan Simmons.

- Players that were injured and did not finish the Stanford game: Iman Marshall.

- After using a single-high safety look almost exclusively against UCLA, USC returned to its two-safety look for the majority of the game aginast Stanford. With Stanford being a run-first team, Keith Heyward made the decision to use Marvell Tell III because of his physicality on the backend. Tell earned his first career start and replaced Jonathan Lockett on kickoff coverage. He played a career-high 67 total snaps, outpacing every other defensive back besides Adoree’ Jackson.

That meant another really low snap count for John Plattenburg, who participated in only four defensive snaps. He had only seven the week before after averaging 36.3 during the 10 games he had previously played this season. Plattenburg also got replaced on the punt coverage unit by Olajuwon Tucker.

- At the linebacker position, Olajuwon Tucker made his second career start, retaking the spot over Michael Hutchings. He set a new career-high 70 total snaps while Hutchings was in for just 13 defensive snaps. At the WILL linebacker spot, Anthony Sarao’s role decreased just slightly for the third game in a row since both Cameron Smith and Lamar Dawson were hurt at Colorado. Sarao played four less defensive snaps than against UCLA. Getting extra reps was Uchenna Nwosu, who participated in 32 defensive snaps, his highest total since the season opener against Arkansas State.

- Linebacker Don Hill again was the second rush end player to see action, playing eight snaps on the second drive of the game. Scott Felix came in to finish the drive off and Hill was not seen from again for the rest of the game. Felix played a season-low 18 defensive snaps as Porter Gustin earned the start and the majority of the reps, playing 33 snaps.

- It’s not surprising to see Adoree Jackson’s name atop the count of total plays for a game. He finished with 80 total snaps to lead the team. But it is surprising to see him ask to come out of a game. He requested a substitute in the second half, but was waved off. After starting cornerback Iman Marshall left the game in the first quarter, Jackson and Kevon Seymour did not leave the field unless USC went to its goal line package, which featured no defensive backs.

- Speaking of Iman Marshall, I rewatched all 16 of his defensive snaps and his two plays on special teams to see if I could ascertain where an injury may have occurred. During the game, I saw the trainers looking and shining a light into his eyes on the sideline, making me believe it may have been concussion related, but while rewatching all of his plays, there was no big hit that stands out as a potential concussion-causing hit.

The only possibility may have been a hit that he delivered to Christian McCaffrey with the crown of his helmet to the McCaffrey’s face mask. However, Marshall jumped up from the hit with no immediate signs of any issues and played the rest of the first series and half the second series before coming out of the game and never returning.

- Behind Adoree’ Jackson on the total play count was wide receiver Darreus Rogers. He played all 69 official offensive snaps and nine plays on special teams. Rogers actually came off the field for one offensive play, but there was a penalty and therefore didn’t count as an official snap.

- With the slower tempo that Stanford runs, USC relied more heavily on its starters on both sides of the ball. Along with Rogers, five other USC’s offensive starters played all 69 snaps. Cody Kessler and four of the five offensive linemen didn’t leave the game, including Nico Falah making his first career start at center.

Only Viane Talamaivao came out of the game and that was only for one series, which went backwards 11 yards in three plays. With Zach Banner playing the entire game, freshman tackle Chuma Edoga did not play for the first time this season. Edoga wasn’t the only player to see his reps decline.

Chris Brown played just the previously mentioned three-and-out drive. Jalen Greene played just two snaps and De’Quan Hampton played only one before the final drive when JuJu Smith-Schuster came out and Hampton was in for the final four plays. Deontay Burnett saw just three plays. Dominic Davis wasn’t used on offense. Neither was Soma Vainuku. USC only used the fullback on five plays, all of them going to Jahleel Pinner.

Ronald Jones II even saw his lowest snap total since the Cal came when he was banged up a bit. He played just 15 snaps, but rushed for 50 yards on six carries for an 8.3-yard average. Tre Madden participated in 13 plays, but ran the ball only once. And because of his full-time defensive duties with Iman Marshall out, Adoree’ Jackson was only used on offense for six plays with one touch — a 27-yard carry.

- On the defensive side, Su’a Cravens was the only player to participate in all 64 defensive snaps, increasing his average to 57.4 defensive plays per game this year. After Cravens were a pair of young guys, Olajuwon Tucker with 60 snaps and Marvell Tell III with 56 defensive snaps.

But the place that the reliance on first teamers could be noticed best was on the defensive line. Antwaun Woods tied a season high with 52 defensive snaps while Delvon Simmons was three shy of his season high at 53 snaps and Greg Townsend played 48. Claude Pelon stayed right around his average, playing 22 snaps for the second week in a row while freshmen Noah Jefferson and Rasheem Green both saw declines.

- Taking a look at the yards per play numbers, Justin Davis’ production stands out. When he was in the game, the offense averaged 6.4 yards while that number was just 3.8 for Ronald Jones II and 2.3 for Tre Madden. Another positional discrepancy was at tight end. The offense averaged 6.8 yards per play when Taylor McNamara was in the game, but just 4.0 with Tyler Petite on the field.

On defense, here weren’t many positive numbers with Stanford averaging 6.5 yards per play. The defense had a better yards per play average with Iman Marshall (4.6 ypp) than Kevon Seymour (8.1) and was actually better with Scott Felix on the field rather than any of the other rush ends with Felix having a 4.9 ypp, Porter Gustin’s being 7.4 and Don Hill’s at 8.0 ypp.

The best numbers on the defensive line were Greg Townsend’s 5.5 and Delvon Simmons at 5.6 despite both being on the field for the Cardinal’s biggest play of the night — Christian McCaffrey’s momentum-changing 67-yard reception on third down. But for the second week in a row, Michael Hutchings actually produced the top yards per play average of any defensive player with more than five snaps. Stanford gained a total of 13 yards in 13 plays.
