Q&A with Kyle Williams

Ranked by The Insiders as the #4 linebacker in the entire nation, Bolingbrook's (IL) Kyle Williams is an elite prospect who put up impressive numbers as a junior with 88 tackles, 5 sacks, and 6 interceptions. Receiving attention from coast to coast, he's narrowed it down to a top 6 and has begun to think about some official visits. Do the Trojans have a shot at one of those?

WeAreSC- What schools are you looking at right now, in order if you can?

Williams- "It's Iowa, Oregon, Purdue, UCLA, Miami, and USC."

WeAreSC- So that's in order?

Williams- "Yes, but the top 6 schools are really close, you know."

WeAreSC- Have all of those schools offered?

Williams- "Yes."

WeAreSC- Do you have one or two leaders out of that group?

Williams- "It's really tight, but if I had to say that I had a leader, it would be Iowa."

WeAreSC- What do you like about Iowa?

Williams- "I like Coach Ferentz, he just seems like a really good coach, down to earth, he doesn't seem like he can't talk to his players. He's just in the office all the time and it seems like he relates to the guys really good. Me and my dad and my mom have had really good talks with him in person and on the phone. Just the whole staff, Coach Erb, he's recruiting me. He seems really cool. If I went there Coach Wilson would be my linebacker coach and he seems like a really good guy, and then the players seem really cool. And then on top of that, a running back from my school this year, he graduated in 2003, he's going to be attending Iowa this fall."

WeAreSC- I heard that you set up some official visits?

Williams- "I set up one with Oregon."

WeAreSC- In looking at the different schools, what are the factors that you're going to look at?

Williams- "First off, I want to go to a school that has really good graduation rates because I don't want to just go to school to play football. I want to go to school to get my degree. You know, you get that paper and you'll be decent for the rest of your life. Then, I want to go to a school with a rich winning tradition, a school that I know will be in a bowl game. I don't want to go play for a losing team. And then I want to go to a school with just great people. Great people on the football team, the football coaches, and just in the town. I don't want to be walking down the street, crossing the street, maybe make a mistake and cut someone off, and then they're flipping me off and stuff, you know."

WeAreSC- I notice that you're looking at different schools from all over the country. Will distance from home play a factor?

Williams- "No."

WeAreSC- What about early playing time?

Williams- "Maybe, yeah, I'd say so because I don't want to go somewhere where I'm going to be sitting on the pine. I want to at least play as a freshman if I can."

WeAreSC- You mentioned USC in your Top 6. What has you looking at them right now?

Williams- "I like Coach Carroll. I talked to him. Coach Lane Kiffin, he's a really cool guy. I like Coach Holt, the linebacker coach up there. He's a really good guy. Yeah, and when I was talking to him he said that Keith Rivers, USC is his favorite and he's thinking about going there, so that's a plus because if we both went there then I know we'd be there for four years and that would be tough, two of the top linebackers in the country. That would be tight."

WeAreSC- How did your discussion with coach Carroll go?

Williams- "He said he really enjoyed watching me play on film. He said when Coach Kiffin came up to my high school, he had nothing but positive things to say, and that he thought that if I came up there, they're losing some linebackers this year, he said he could see me playing early. I just have to come in there knowing the defense. I have to catch on quick. He said that would probably be the only thing because he could see that I have the talent and the ability to do it, I just have to know the defensive schemes."

WeAreSC- So that was back in May?

Williams- "They called me in May but I call up there every once in awhile. I think the last time I talked to them was in mid-July."

WeAreSC- Which linebacker spot have they talked to you about coming in to play at?

Williams- "Will."

WeAreSC- Have you ever been out to Los Angeles?

Williams- "No, but I'm going to get out there for a visit. I've never been to California."

WeAreSC- I know you're looking at USC and UCLA. Which school are you going to visit?

Williams- "What I'm going to do is visit the school that I favor the most. A lot is going to play on how both of the teams do this season. This season I'm going to make a decision if I want to take an official to UCLA or USC."

WeAreSC-Are there any other schools that you know you want to visit?

Williams- "Miami."

WeAreSC- Talk about what you think your strengths are as a linebacker.

Williams- "My strengths, I think my speed. I'm really kind of fast, you know. And then, I think I'm a pretty good cover guy. I can cover backs out of the backfield, receivers, things like that. I'm really good in one-on-one coverage and playing in the zone. When people rush me off the edge, I love doing that. When they send me off the edge and I can just knock those quarterbacks, because I get there quick."

WeAreSC- What's your current height and weight?

Williams- "6'2 and 219."

WeAreSC- Do you play any other sports?

Williams- "Yeah, I'm a wrestler. I finished sixth in the state at 215 this past year."

WeAreSC- Do you have a max on the bench and squat?

Williams- "Yeah, my personal best on bench is 350, in squat it's 520, and dead lift is 560."

WeAreSC- Is there any chance you might commit early or do you plan on going through the whole process and taking your trips?

Williams- "I plan on going through the whole process. I plan on taking at least three visits."
