Portland (Ore.) three-star linebacker Daniel Green saw his stock take off this month with scholarship offers from Oregon, Arizona and several other Pac-12 schools.
However, when his dream school came calling, Green wasted no time in committing. Madison High School head coach Don Johnson knew USC was getting serious about Green, but the scholarship offer and commitment happened before he could finish his dinner.
“Yes sir, he texted me he got the offer from USC and was committing just a little while ago,” said Johnson. “I have no clue what went into it all — to be honest.
“I think it was just the offer he envisioned and dreamed about. He plays linebacker and he knows about the tradition and history of linebackers at USC. When they came calling he jumped on it. That’s where he felt he wanted to be.”
Green was recruited to USC by linebacker coach Johnny Nansen. The former Trojan running back coach moved to defensive last winter and also recruits the Northwest Region for USC.
“They’ve been sitting back and watching his academic progress,” said Johnson. “They’ve been waiting to see how he was going to do, but they liked him.
“He’s been doing well in the class room and has just a couple of i’s to dot and t’s to cross. USC decided they were going to go on him now and take that chance to wait for him at the finish line.”
Listed at 6-foot-3, 225-pounds, Green is listed by some as an outside linebacker, while he plays mostly inside linebacker for Madison.
“He’s a legit 6-foot-3 and he’s definitely an inside guy.,” said Johnson. “He reads the triangle well and patrols that middle.”
While Green’s stock has skyrocketed over the past month, most USC fans aren’t familiar with his game. Johnson says a picture is worth a thousand words.
“If USC fans want to know about Daniel, put on the tape,” laughed Johnson. “I’ve said since I first started coaching Daniel that he reminds me a lot of Chris Claiborne.
“I actually called Chris and told him the same thing. I played at Corona and won a couple state titles there, so I know Chris and know how he played. Daniel reminds me a lot of him.”

Green’s commitment to USC comes on the heels of being offered a scholarship by Oregon a week ago. But Johnson doesn’t see his pledge wavering at the start.
“When Daniel says something, he means it,” said Johnson. “I have to talk to him still and see where he is with things, but this was big for him.”
