PAC-12 MEDIA DAYS . . . JUST ASKIN'

Pac-12 Media Days here in Hollywood are open to the public this week. We're guessing Trojan fans would like to have some of these questions answered by Commissioner Larry Scott (above) and the coaches -- even some players.

They're here. They're in Hollywood. And they're open to the public.

Here's hoping a number of USC fans find their way to the Pac-12 Football Media Days Thursday and Friday at the Hollywood and Highland Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day in the central courtyard.

And the more we think about these first-ever fan-friendly Media Days, which is a surprisingly good idea coming out of the Pac-12 office especially for an event in LA, we think it wouldn't be a bad idea to frame some of the questions USC fans might have. We're Just Askin' for our friends.

*** For COMMISSIONER LARRY SCOTT: The Commissioner is up first. And may have the toughest job here. We'd like to know what the league is doing now that the pundits are predicting that the Pac-12 will be the first -- and only -- Power Five conference to get shut out of the College Football Playoffs for a second straight year. Any chance of taking some of the Pac-12's "outreach to Asia" and making it an "outreach to the rest of the good old USA" like by having Media Days NOT on the same days as the SEC where all the attention is going today and tomorrow. And DirecTV, anyone? Late games? Pac-12 Networks in a mere one-fifth of the homes the SEC and Big Ten Networks are in? Even the nine-game schedule? Anyone? JUST ASKIN.'

Now for the rest of Thursday's schedule. We'll direct most of these to the teams' coaches with one exception:

*** For UTAH'S KYLE WHITTINGHAM: Which will be more motivating for his Utah team -- last year's Trojan romp over the No.3 Utes or the summer transfer to USC of grad student Stevie Tu'ikolovatu? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For ARIZONA'S RICH RODRIGUEZ: How hot will it be in Tucson on Oct. 15? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For CAL'S SONNY DYKES: Just when you got your system going a bit, you lose your No 1 QB Jared Goff early to the Rams before snatching Texas Tech transfer Davis Webb from Colorado. But are you starting over? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For USC'S CLAY HELTON: You're one of 24 national coaches -- six from the Pac-12 -- on the Watch List for Bobby Dodd Award as the No. 1 coach in all aspects of the profession along with many of those at the top of the college game. What would you like to see this season from your Trojans that would make that nomination on the money? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For USC'S ZACH BANNER/ADOREE' JACKSON:  Zach, will you let Adoree' talk? . . . JUST ASKIN'

*** For OREGON'S MARK HELFRICH: Can you pull a second straight graduate transfer quarterback rabbit out of the hat the way you did with Vernon Adams with this year's guy -- Montana State's Dakota Prukop? . . . JUST ASKIN.

*** FOR WASHINGTON STATE'S MIKE LEACH: What does it feel like to be favored? Does that change the meaning of "Coug-ing it"? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

Now for Friday's schedule:

*** For DIRECTOR OF OFFICIATING DAVID COLEMAN: Last year, your first, you had to address how so many of the league schools dominated the bottom of the barrel nationally in the flag-happy Pac-12. Now with four teams in the top 42 for fewest penalties, only USC at No. 120 with 103 penalties last season and UCLA at No. 123 with 108, have been left behind. What's happening here? Did the LA schools not get the memo? Or the officials? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For COLORADO'S MIKE MACINTYRE: How happy are you not to have to play Cal this year and not to have to hear all the talk of the last-minute Webb switcheroo? . . . JUST ASKIN.'

*** For ARIZONA STATE'S TODD GRAHAM: So no "national championship" talk this season? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For OREGON STATE'S GARY ANDERSEN: So just how great a job did Mike Riley do in Corvallis? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For UCLA'S JIM MORA: So just where exactly is Josh Rosen today? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For WASHINGTON'S CHRIS PETERSEN: So how does it feel to be a 6.5-point favorite against USC Nov. 12 in Seattle? And a followup: Those roofs on rebuilt Husky Stadium, they don't cover the field, do they? . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For STANFORD'S DAVID SHAW: Will you go along with that wonderful old Ernie Banks' doubleheader call for USC and Stanford and just say "Let's play two" again this season? . . . . JUST ASKIN'.

*** For STANFORD'S CHRISTIAN MCCAFFREY: Can you play the Stanford fight song on your harmonica? And a followup: Does Stanford have a fight song? And if so, would you play it during the game Sept. 17 -- other than at halftime? . . . JUST ASKIN'.
