Though Smith-Schuster has a lot more invested and will be affected to a much greater extent than the fans, he is also searching for clues from the coaching staff. He's keeping an eye on who takes the first rep, who gets the most snaps and who performs best.
"I'm just like you guys. I'm trying to find out too," Smith-Schuster said. "You couldn't really tell who started because Coach [Clay] Helton was kind of smart with it. He starts Max Browne. You think, 'Okay, cool. Max Browne is starting.' Then he puts Sam Darnold in with the ones and they go back and forth. Next thing you know, you've got [Matt] Fink in there and we're like okay, there's something really going on, so you don't know who is starting.
"It's all crazy. Hopefully, I'm trying to find out who is the starting quarterback hopefully Week 2, Week 3. Then I can work on them and get that chemistry for Alabama."
