Darreus Rogers proud to be named nation's top blocking receiver

Darreus Rogers talks about having his best fall camp in his time at USC, teaching the underclassmen wideouts and being named the best blocking receiver in the country.

When Darreus Rogers first suited up for the Trojans, he had a little Keyshawn Johnson in him. Both were local superstar receivers that weren't able to come to USC immediately because of his academics. Rogers had to grayshirt, deferring a semester before enrolling.

But once he was on the field, he wanted the ball thrown his way like every young receiver. It took Rogers some time before he realized that he could make an impact even when the Trojans weren't throwing the ball.

"Blocking is as important as catching the ball," Rogers said. "At USC, we run the ball a lot and if you don't catch a block, the coach is going to pull you right out. I just took pride in that.

"We've got an All-American receiver that I'm still trying to compete with. I'm trying to be the best like him, but I can take my game and be the best at something else. I took pride in my blocking."

Last week, Pro Football Focus listed Rogers as the best blocking receiver in the nation, which brought a big smile to his face.

"I take pride in every play, pass or not pass. I just take honor in that. I still want to hold the No. 1 spot and I feel like it's an honor. My coach said that's something to be proud about and I'm thankful that I'm doing that."

Rogers believes he is having his best fall camp since becoming a Trojan this year. Along with his blocking, Rogers has taken pride in tutoring the slew of young receivers that USC now has. That includes teaching them the value of blocking.

"They see that you've got a dude that's All-American at wide receiver, a dude that's blocking, they just feel like that they can be No. 1 at something else. Whatever it is, I just tell them to work hard at it. You never know who's watching, who's looking. I never knew that I would be the No. 1 blocker in college ball. It was just amazing when I found that out."
