Monday practice recap

The Trojans held a player parents barbeque prior to practice and then had the Trojan Marching Band do a lap around the field to entertain players and parents with a few renditions of some USC classics.

Ryan Kileen made a 54 yard field goal. He and Mario Danelo made several kicks during the kicking session of practice, including a few from 43 yards, but the excitement came when Kileen drilled one from 54 yards that cleared the crossbars to big cheers from his teammates.

In punt return drills it was Carlson, Arbet and Bush back at various times to return the kicks.

Dominique Byrd got a lot of work in the team drills and caught most everything thrown his way. Gregg Guenther was out there but did not practice so Byrd got a lot of extra work and looked good. Dominique did a good job after one catch to shed a tackle from Dallas Sartz for extra yardage. Nick Vanderboom had one catch along the sideline where he took a huge hit from Jason Leach to get driven out of bounds.

Sartz had a sack of Leinart early in the team drill. Mike Patterson had one as well.

Chris McFoy had a blocked punt in the punt drill and came back during the team scrimmage drill to make a couple fine catches. Chris is more aggressive this fall and held on tight to the ball on one play despite a strip attempt from Will Poole.

Manuel Wright looked as good as we've seen from him in his brief Trojan career. He got a lot of work in the team drill, all the freshmen defensive linemen saw a lot of action today, and he also performed well in the blocking drills held with the offensive line on Brian Kennedy Field. Manuel has such speed to go with his size and after struggling somewhat for the first part of camp to adjust to the tempo of practice at this level we saw some bright spots from him today.

Lofa Tatupu made a good play to read a run by Hershel Dennis and he came up to fill the hole nicely and trap Hershel for a loss.

Chris Bocage broke up a deep pass to Mike Williams with an impressive break and leap to beat Mike to the ball.

Kyle Williams saw action at LT (Lenny was at center with Drake at LG) and Kyle was showing good movement getting outside on his blocks.

LenDale White had a touchdown run.

There were a few more injured guys back today and we saw combinations we are likely to see once the season starts. Darnell Bing and Jason Leach were the starters at safety, both Keary Colbert and Mike Williams were out there at receiver and we also had the top four corners (Allmond, Poole, Arbet and Nunn) on the field in the rotation.
