Wednesday practice recap

It was full pads for the Trojans today in the afternoon workout and they had a hard hitting team scrimmage drill to end the day.

Reggie Bush continues to show that he will be a player to watch this season. Reggie got a lot of work today and he set the tone early in a drill on Howard Jones Field with a run that saw him hit an extra burst to get outside Frostee Rucker and then cut inside to avoid a tackle attempt from Marcell Allmond, it was terrific hip movement from Reggie as he just glided to the inside to gain more yardage. He later gained 25 yards on a run behind a block from big John Drake and it took a hard tackle by John Walker to bring him down. Perhaps his best run came inside the 10 yard line when he patiently waited for his blockers, once he saw the direction Matt Spanos was driving his man Reggie simply cut off Matt's block and got down to the two yard line. It was a good bit of running.

Another player who shined today was tight end Nick Vanderboom. Nick has been steadily improving and showing that he could be a contributor at a spot that needs depth. He's got size and today "Boomer" also showed real toughness. On one catch he was swarmed by six guys but managed to hold on to the ball. A couple plays later he gained 15 yards with a reception before a perfect form tackle from Salo Faraimo drove him out of bounds. Salo got praise from Nick Holt after the play. Vanderboom saved his best for the end of the drill as his team was driving for the end zone. He caught a short pass from John David Booty and headed upfield where he broke an initial tackle attempt from Thomas Williams before the other defenders came over to bring him down.

Booty got a lot of action today and he ended the practice the right way with a pretty touchdown pass to Justin Wyatt. An assist on the play went to Paul McDonald who picked up a stray Gatorade bottle near the sidelines before the play started to clear the path for Wyatt's route. Booty looked comfortable today and was putting some good zip on his short passes. John David hit Kurt Katnik over the middle and Kurt did a good job to hang on to the ball despite a huge hit from Kyle Matthews. John David also showed his patience on one throw when he waited for Wyatt to clear his defender before firing a strike for a completion.

The team worked on some one on one tackling drills early in the day. The defensive backs were matched up with the tight ends and Darnell Bing had a couple nice form tackles including one where he drove Dominique Byrd into the ground. Desmond Reed did a good job to strip Vanderboom while making a tackle. The linebackers went against the running backs and LenDale White had a powerful run where he broke a tackle attempt from Dallas Sartz.

Will Poole had some good match-ups today with Mike Williams and held his own. Will is not lacking for aggressiveness and he has the mentality to step in right away and be a contributor.

A pair of freshmen defensive linemen who played well were Lawrence Jackson and Manuel Wright. Each batted down a pass from Matt Cassel (the block from Wright led to a pick by Ronald Nunn). In early run drills we saw Kenechi Udeze dominate his side of the line and LaJuan Ramsey got into the backfield with a solid bull rush.

Lofa Tatupu had a nice interception on a pass from Matt Leinart...Whitney Lewis is expected to return to practice in three days...Jacob Rogers went through some warm-up drills and looked to be moving fairly well...Gregg Guenther was dressed and going through drills...Mike Williams had a real nice catch along the sideline of a throw from Leinart against Ronald Nunn...Chris McFoy continues to impress....Greg Farr stripped Byrd after a completion by Brandon Hance....Mario Danelo made a 35 yard field goal....Sedrick Ellis had a sack....Brandon Ting had a nice open field tackle on a run by White...Ryan Ting followed his brother on the next play with a big hit on Greig Carlson
