USC's Jordan McLaughlin named Pac-12 Player of Week

USC junior point guard Jordan McLaughlin named Pac-12 Player of the Week after leading the Trojans to the Las Vegas Classic title with a game-winning overtime basket.

With star forward and captain Bennie Boatwright out six weeks, the USC Trojans needed someone to step up and fill in the scoring void.

His fellow captain, junior Jordan McLaughlin, has done that and more. McLaughlin was averaging 10.1 points through the first seven games (Boatwright was injured in the seventh game). Since then, he has averaged 20 points per game, helping USC add six more wins to their unbeaten record -- now at 13-0 -- and move up to No. 22 in the Associated Press top 25.

McLaughlin averaged 19.0 points, 6.3 assists, 4.7 rebound and 1.7 steals in three wins last week to earn Pac-12 Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career.

USC's point guard played a remarkable 39.0 minutes per game last week, including 43 Friday night in the Las Vegas Classic championship game against Wyoming after the game went into overtime. McLaughlin won the game for the Trojans when he used a nifty behind-the-back move to get by his defender and then split two forwards with a lefty scoop shot off the glass in the final five seconds.

The bucket earned him tournament MVP honors after he finished with 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in the championship game.

McLaughlin had 19 assists to four turnovers last week -- none of which came in the 43 minutes against the Cowboys.

He made all 11 of his free throws last week and has now made his last 22 shots from the charity stripe. But that's not the only place where he's making his shots. McLaughlin is shooting 51.9 percent from the floor -- best of any guard in the Pac-12. He also ranks second in the conference in minutes played (34.2) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.8), third in assists (5.2 apg) and 14th in scoring (14.7 ppg)

This was USC's first conference honor this season after the Trojans were shut out for any weekly awards last season. The last Trojan to be named Pac-12 Player of the Week was Elijah Stewart on for the week of Dec. 14-21 in 2014. After a perfect non-conference schedule, USC opens Pac-12 play Wednesday at Oregon State. The game is slated to begin at 8 p.m. and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
