Levi Jones is one of the top linebackers in the state of Texas, but when he put out his list of five potential schools on Monday, there was only one college from his home state listed.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound four-star Austin (Texas) Westlake outside linebacker showed that there is a very good chance he will be leaving the state to play his college ball when he released his top five schools on Twitter.
"Making my commitment on National Signing Day. #30Days," Jones wrote, unveiling his Feb. 1 announcement date as well.
Rather than a bunch of Longhorn State schools, Jones' list has one school in Texas, Texas A&M. If he doesn't become an Aggie, Jones plans to leave the middle of the country and head to one of the coasts. If he goes east, it will be to Florida or Florida State. If he chooses to go west, it will be to Los Angeles where he has USC and UCLA both listed.
Jones is the No. 3 outside linebacker in Texas and the No. 189 overall prospect in the 2017 Scout 300. He is currently rated the 14th best outside linebacker in the 2017 class, but those rankings are likely to change soon after the All-American games.
Jones showed during practices for the UnderArmour All-American game in Orlando that he is a long, athletic linebacker capable of covering a lot of ground from side to side. He showed his ability to set the edge against the run and to come out of his stance to chase down ballcarriers that choose to run away from him.
USC needs a player of Jones' ilk in a bad way after the Trojans have seen significant attrition at their outside linebacker positions due to suspensions and dismissals. Since the end of last season, the position has seen Scott Felix, Don Hill and Jabari Ruffin all be suspended or dismissed. Olajuwon Tucker was the latest OLB casualty when he was ruled academically ineligible for the spring semester, forcing him to miss the Rose Bowl. USC also lost inside linebacker Osa Masina, who had the potential to transition outside.
That makes Jones' recruitment of importance for the Trojans, but pulling a highly touted linebacker out of the heart of college football land in Texas will be no easy task.
Jones is planning to take an official visit to Florida on Jan. 13 and then has two open weekends to take his final two official visits, but has not yet decided which two of his other five finalists will get officials.
