Las Vegas (Nev.) three-star wide receiver Randal Grimes donned the No. 9 in photos during his USC official visit this weekend, and the Trojans coaching staff is hoping he can fill that role in the future.
At 6-foot-4, 215-pounds, Grimes is really nothing like Juju Smith-Schuster. While Smith-Schuster graduate from Long Beach (Calif.) Poly High School as a 6-foot-2, 215-pound five-star safety, Grimes will enter the USC football program as a wide receiver from his first day on campus.
“Me being a wide receiver, I have an opportunity to step in right away and play,” said Grimes.
That is, Grimes expects to compete for the spot vacated by Smith-Schuster. Whether he is ready to fill No. 9’s shoes or not remains to be seen.
Ironically, his host on his official visit to USC was freshman Tyler Vaughns. Redshirting this past season, Vaughns will be competing for a role within the Trojans offense next season.
“The highlight of the trip for me was hanging out with all of the coaches and the players,” said Grimes. “Just being at USC I’m surrounded by so many great people.
“I spend a lot of time with the other recruits — all of them.”
Grimes, who officially visited Nebraska and Arizona State says he is ready to shut down the recruiting process.
“I’m fully committed to USC,” said Grimes. “Feb. 1, I will be a Trojan.”
