USC was fighting an uphill battle all along and couldn’t quite overcome the faux-USC for the commitment of Jones County (Miss.) Community College defensive lineman Javon Kinlaw. Originally from Goose Greek (S.C.), Kinlaw re-upped his commitment to South Carolina after picking the Gamecocks out of high school last year, but not qualifying academically.
After Kinlaw told Phil Kornblut over the weekend that he was ‘all set, South Carolina 100 percent,’ Kinlaw confirmed that Wednesday when he announced his intention to re-commit and become a Gamecock on Twitter:
Kinlaw spent his freshman year of college as a force in the middle of the Jones County line playing both defensive tackle and defensive end. He transfers with four years to complete his final three years of eligibility. A 2016 Army All-American, the 6-foot-6 Kinlaw weighed in at 330 pounds on a recent official visit and could have played either nose tackle or defensive tackle in Clancy Pendergast’s 5-2 defensive front. If Kinlaw slimmed down to his preferred weight of 300 pounds, he could have also been an option at defensive end when USC uses it’s 2-4-5 nickel package.
Instead, Kinlaw will next suit up in the South Carolina burgundy. The No. 3 junior college defensive lineman and No. 16 overall junior college prospect in the Scout Juco 100 tallied 26 tackles, including four for loss, with four and a half sacks in eight games this season at Jones County. He was named a second team junior college All-American and honored as the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) South Division's Most Valuable Defensive Lineman to go along with spots on the All-MACJC and All-Region 23 first teams.
Kinlaw committed to South Carolina early in the process this year, but backed away from his Gamecocks’ commitment. He chose to de-commit in November, but kept the Gamecocks in the mix along with the actual USC and Alabama, who he eliminated in the past week.
