USC football recruiting: Neil Farrell can't be flipped, signs with LSU

USC makes a late run at a defensive lineman from the South, but can't pull off the flip of Neil Farrell.

USC has pulled off its share of National Signing Day coups, swiping high-profile players that had kept the Trojans' interest under the radar. Who can forget the defensive lineman from Daytona Beach's Mainland High that USC was able to steal away from the Sunshine State? Big Leonard Williams became an immediate impact player in Los Angeles, worked his way to All-American status and the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft -- the highest draft spot for a USC defender since Darrell Russell in 1997.

The Trojans to pull another big-bodied defensive lineman on Wednesday, but despite a strong official visit in January, the Trojans couldn't complete a flip of 6-foot-4, 293-pound Mobile (Ala.) Murphy four-star defensive tackle Neil Farrell. Farrell stuck with his late summer commitment to LSU and former USC interim head coach Ed Orgeron. He signed with the Tigers on National Signing Day, per LSU's Twitter account:

The Alabama big man is rated as the No. 1 defensive tackle in his home state and the No. 17 player at the position in the nation. Without much warning, USC got Farrell to visit Los Angeles for the Jan. 13 weekend and gave him something to think about. After returning from the visit, Farrell told Scout there were 100 things he liked the most about the trip.

"I loved everything. The facilities, academics, all the girls lol, the food, just everything. It was an exciting weekend.

"Everything was completely different. Downtown L.A. is just amazing."

The Trojans were searching for impact players on the defensive line and Farrell fit the bill. According to MaxPreps, Farrell amassed 101 tackles, averaging 8.4 tackles per game. He was often in the opposing backfield, collecting 28 tackles for loss, including 13 sacks to go along with 14 hurries, four pass deflections, a fumble caused and another recovered. But they couldn't do enough to get him out of the South and away from Orgeron.

Here are a couple of quick Neil Farrell highlights from the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star practice week:
