USC football recruiting: Erik Krommenhoek becomes a Trojan

USC adds another big-bodied tight end with the signing of three-star Northern California product, Erik Krommenhoek.

Erik Krommenhoek, a three-star tight end from Danville (Calif.) Monte Vista, is now officially a member of the 2017 USC Trojans recruiting class. Krommenhoek faxed in his National Letter of Intent to the USC athletic department, according to a source close to him.

The 6-foot-5, 237-pound tight end is rated as the No. 31 tight end recruit in the 2017 class and the No. 8 at the position in the West region. The Trojans also are hoping to add Sacramento (Calif.) Inderkum four-star Josh Falo at the position.

While there will be plenty of competition at the position at USC with three scholarship tight ends returning, Krommenhoek and Falo complement each other because they present different skill sets. USC expects Krommenhoek to come in, bulk up and be a blocking tight end that can also catch the ball while Falo has the ability to split out and become a matchup nightmare for linebackers trying to cover in space.

Like freshman tight end Cary Angeline a year before him, Krommenhoek committed to USC in late June and remained a steady commit throughout the year despite struggles early in the season.

Krommenhoek may become the top block-first tight end, but that doesn't mean he is just an extra offensive lineman. He has worked hard on his open field moves to improve the overall dynamic of his game. He showed an improve ability to make defenders miss this season. Though he was under utilized by Monte Vista, Krommenhoek finished with 26 catches for 447 yards and seven touchdowns this season.

At 6-foot-5, Krommenhoek could be an immediate red zone target for Sam Darnold, but with Angeline having already redshirted this season and veterans Tyler Petite and Daniel Imatorbhebhe returning, a redshirt year is likely.
