Gardena (Calif.) Serra cornerback Max Williams may only be 5-foot-9, but the 2018 four-star plays like he is 6-foot-2.
Williams has no fear going up against opposing teams’ beat receiver whether they are short, shifty slot receivers or tall, physical wideouts.
“No matter the size, I play big,” Williams said. “I just play aggressive. No matter the receiver size, play aggressive, get hands on the receiver. Play with technique. That's big. And my speed.”
That’s why the sophomore has already surpassed 20 scholarship offers from around the country with schools as far away as Boston College coming to check out Williams’ skill set.
The 160-pound dynamo defender had 24 tackles and two interceptions as a sophomore after having 34 and three the year before, but he also spent time on offense this past year, catching 25 passes for 278 yards and two scores.
Williams has also impressed locally, earning a scholarship from USC, the nearby Serra pipeline destination school, after being one of the best at the Trojans’ Rising Stars Camp last summer.
“I'm always close to SC. Serra/SC connection. The coaches always come up there, talk to us, make contact with us,” Williams said. “They just want me to come to the school. They want me to be the next Serra great at the school. We've already had Marqise Lee, Robert Woods, Adoree’ [Jackson], Deontay [Burnett].”
Williams also pointed out that there are several Serra graduates currently on the USC roster — eight now that Jackson has gone to the NFL.
“I took plenty of visits to USC already,” Williams said. “I'm definitely going to USC for spring practice and UCLA I'm going to also take a visit there.”
But Williams isn’t limiting his collegiate choices just to the Los Angeles area. He took an unofficial visit to LSU earlier this year and is planning on visiting Nebraska this spring, possibly for the school’s spring game. A trip to Oregon is likely in a couple of weeks and Williams said Oklahoma is another school that is amongst his top schools at this early stage in his recruitment.
