Spring Ball Day 6

It was a physical practice today with several big hits from the defense along with a good number of big plays from the offense as the Trojans held their final practice before the scrimmage on Sunday. The scrimmage will take place at the Coliseum in front of a large crowd of Junior Day attendees.

There was a lot of special teams work today including kickoff coverage and return as well as field goals. Desmond Reed returned one kick and when the play was over he ran an extra few yards and did a complete front flip before tossing the ball to the referee. Desmond had a couple nice plays during the day including one change of direction play where he eluded a tackle attempt from Thomas Williams for a 10 yard pickup. On the final play of the day Reed caught a pass from Booty after putting a shake move on Ronald Nunn and the play resulted in a touchdown.

Both Fred Davis and Van Brown were practicing after missing yesterday. Reggie Bush (groin), Frostee Rucker (toe) and Kurt Katnik (concussion) were held out of today's practice. Whitney Lewis hurt a finger on his right hand but is expected to be fine.

One position change we saw today was Shaun Cody getting some work at defensive end with Manuel Wright taking his spot in the middle. Mike Patterson was the starter as usual at NG with Lawrence Jackson at the other end spot.

The biggest hit of the day belonged to Jason Leach on a play when Hershel Dennis turned the corner at the sideline and was headed upfield for a nice gain when Leach came over with a solid pop to the upper body that sent Hershel tumbling out of bounds. There were a couple other big hits as well. Collin Ashton had an open shot when Brandon Hance threw a high pass to Fred Davis and as Fred went up to try and get the ball he took the hit from Ashton and the pass was incomplete. Alex Holmes ran a pattern and as John Walker came up to check him the contact sent Walker backwards but the pass was thrown to the opposite side of the field.

Holmes had another big day catching the ball and showing his ability to gain yards after the catch. Alex caught one pass in the flat from Leinart that went for 25 yards and a couple plays later Leinart had a real nice pocket which allowed him to step up and fire a strike 30 yards downfield to Alex. On one of the final plays of the practice Alex caught a deep pass and there was good contact with him and Darnell Bing along the sideline.

John David Booty was showing some good arm strength today on his passes. He had a nice completion to LenDale White, who was chased down by Oscar Lua, and Booty ended one drive with a touchdown pass to Chris McFoy......Terrell Thomas intercepted a pass from Hance.....Ronald Nunn had a sack.....David Kirtman had a long gain on a pass play where he showed good speed down the sideline for 22 yards.....Matt Grootegoed had a sack on one play where Alex Morrow and John Walker were also right there and wouldve made the sack if Groots didnt beat them to it.....Mike Patterson had a sack where he blew past Tiny Malu (Tiny and Travis Watkins alternated at LG with the first team).....Hance and McFoy hooked up for a long touchdown.....After the practice was over several of the Trojan players headed next door to Dedeaux Field to cheer on the baseball team against the Bruins.....Among the guests in attendance today were Jeff, Byers, George Hypolite (Loyola), Ken Ashley (soph RB last year at Servite), Chilo Rachal, Hal Bedsole and Sam Anno.
