Spring Ball Day 7

The Trojans held a scrimmage today at the Coliseum on a hot Sunday afternoon in front of a large group of recruits in attendance for the annual Junior Day. Reggie Bush scored a pair of touchdowns to lead the offense in a strong performance. Here are some highlights from each series of plays:

It didn't take long for the offense to score. On the first play of the day Ryan Kalil went down with a hurt hand, he looked to be in a lot of pain but fortunately he was able to come back later in the scrimmage. Two plays later Matt Leinart calmly dropped back and hit Reggie Bush with a short pass and Reggie did the rest as he scampered 55 yards down the sidelines for a touchdown. The extra point was good from Ryan Killeen.

John Walker had a nice play during the next series when he tackled Bush for a loss. On the next play Bush got outside Shaun Cody, who was in strong pursuit, and Reggie got upfield for a nice gain. Cody beat Kyle Williams for a sack. Leinart tried to get the ball to Alex Holmes in the flat but Dallas Sartz was covering him like a blanket and knocked the ball away. Killeen came on for a 40 yard FG which was good.

Mike McDonald had a nice series while leading the 3rd string against the #3 defense. Mike threw a pass over the middle to Jody Adewale for 12 yards before a strong tackle by Brandon Ting. The play worked so well that McDonald went right back to Adewale with another pass that was good for 13 yards. A few plays later McDonald lofted a pass toward the goal line and Greig Carlson made an impressive grab over Justin Tolliver. Mario Danelo made the extra point.

Tom Malone came on for a punting session and he wowed the crowd with his booming punts. His first kick was from his own 25 and when Carlson fielded the ball he was inside his own five. The same thing happened on the next kick and on the kick after that. It's not too often that you see a punter hit three balls in a row that basically travel about 75 yards in the air. The fourth punt was blocked by Chris McFoy.

John David Booty brought out the offense and the best play of the drive was a screen to Hershel Dennis when Tiny Malu hustled out to block Matt Grootegoed and the play went for 16 yards. Killeen barely missed a 51 yard FG attempt.

Brandon Hance showed his good feet with a series that opened with him scrambling to the outside against the first defense and picking up 30 yards down the sideline. Hance then rolled out and saw good coverage again so he tucked the ball under and received a good block from Bush on Lofa Tatupu which allowed Brandon to gain four yards on the play. Reggie got the carry on the next play and he put a couple shake moves on Cody and Terrell Thomas which froze the defenders and Bush headed into the end zone for a 17 yard TD. Danelo made the extra point.

With Booty at QB he hit McFoy across the middle for 18 yards and then completed a short pass to William Buchanan to put the ball inside the 15. John David then threw a short pass to Holmes who broke a tackle from Greg Farr and waltzed in for the 13 yard score. The two point conversion failed.

Hance pitched a ball to Bush who got outside for 20 yards before Jason Leach came up and drove him out of bounds with a tackle. A sack pushed the ball back and Killeen was forced to try a 50 yard FG which was blocked by Cody.

Leinart completed a pass to Fred Davis for 12 yards along the sidelines. Cody had a sack.
