Cyrus Garrett of Romeoville, Illinois is one of the top-rated linebackers in the Mid-West this year. At 6'3 and 225 pounds, he has the ideal size and speed (4.6) to play at either one of the outside linebacker spots at the next level.

Garrett's Romeoville squad finished the season at 5-4 after a first round loss in the playoffs. He was especially effective this year at getting to the quarterback as he picked up 18 sacks in addition to his 88 tackles. In discussing his strengths as a linebacker, Garrett explained "I think I'm able to see the field real well. Most of my sacks came off of blitzes we do on defense. I feel that I play real well in the open field."

In looking at the different programs recruiting him, Garrett is looking for a school with strong academics, "a program on the rise", and one with "good defensive schemes." Is distance from home a factor? In response to that question he replied, "I mean, it's a factor, but if a school is that good and has everything I want, it's not really going to matter."

Now that the off-season is upon this prospect, he has been able to fully devote his time to his upcoming college decision and there are some interesting new developments

"Illinois, Notre Dame, Penn State, USC, and Arizona" are the schools Garrett is considering right now and he just returned from an official visit tonight, "I just got back today from a Boston College visit. It was great." In reference to the BC-Miami game that he witnessed, Garrett exclaimed, "Oh man, they (Boston College) should have won that game." He also noted that he will visit Illinois on November 30th and either Arizona, Notre Dame, or Penn State on December 7th. He curiously failed to mention a reported visit to USC for November 17th, so I asked him about the supposed trip. "It's been changed and I'm not sure if I'm going to visit SC now because I'm not sure if their schedule is going to conflict with mine because I'm trying to have all my stuff done by Christmas." This is quite a change from a week ago when the Trojans were rumored to be Garrett's leader. However, there are a number of factors that have caused him to cool somewhat on USC, "I still like SC but I haven't been hearing as much from them, so I'm not sure where they're at on trying to get me a scholarship. I'm really just trying to take trips to schools that are giving me scholarships and that have already offered me."

Garrett is scheduled to announce his final decision on Fox Sports Net later on in the year.
