The Kinesiology Factor

Oxnard Rio Mesa (Ca) CB/DB Kevin Thomas (6-0, 178, 4.5) says USC (camp, parental preference) and California (parental preference) still have a "pretty big" lead over Michigan (childhood fave), Arizona and Washington St. Thomas plans to take official visits to Cal, USC and Arizona in Sept and Nov. "I really want to stay on the west coast," said Thomas. "I also know the coaches best at those two schools (Cal and USC)."

"I like USC and Cal because they're both in the Pac-10. I like the Pac-10 because it's a passing league so that obviously works to my advantage being a CB/DB.

"I like USC's competitive work ethic. I also like the fact that they're national champs, that' always nice. I have two friends on their team, (WR) Whitney Lewis and (DB) Josh Pinkard.

"I like the coaches at USC. I like coach Ed Orgeron because he's got a lot of energy, and coach Pete Carroll because he's a really cool guy and he's the DB coach.

"I like Cal because I like the fact that they're a team on the rise and they got a new coach (Jeff Tedford). I also like the fact that they beat USC last year.

"Cal has a really good academic program. I might want to major in Kinesiology. Cal and Michigan offer that course, but USC doesn't. That won't really effect my decision too much though because I'm willing to change my major if I have to.

"I do like Arizona, though, because they have coach Mike Stoops and they're in a rebuilding process--so I'm still thinking about them a lot. I also like Michigan because I'm friends with their DB coach Ron English.

"I'll base my final decision on the school's location and what my parents say. What my parents think will really effect my decision. I'd say there's a very good chance I'll end up at Cal or USC, but I'll make my decision in Jan."
