Monday practice tidbits

There was good enthusiasm today on the practice field as the Trojans held their final on-campus practice before heading to Miami for the Orange Bowl. There was a lot of work on the passing game today and then the team finished their day by saluting the seniors.

Pete Carroll has talked a lot about not having the team peak too soon while using the extra preparation time for a bowl game and we've seen the intensity of the Trojan practices rise in the past week. Today the passing game, led by Matt Leinart, looked very crisp as Matt hit a lot of throws including plenty of medium and deep passes. A couple receivers stood out as Steve Smith caught a deep ball, Dwayne Jarrett went up high with his long arms to pull in a pass down the middle of the field and Alex Holmes caught a couple nice passes in his final day at Howard Jones and Brian Kennedy Field.

On the defensive side of the ball, Kevin Arbet had a beautiful pick of a John David Booty pass and Dallas Sartz interepted Leinart during the team drill. Collin Ashton was kicking himself after dropping a pick that went right through his hands. Arbet had the best hit of the day after a pass to Chris McFoy where Kevin arrived at the same time as the ball with a solid pop. Travis Tofi batted down a pass at the line.

One sign of the added enthusiasm came when Pete Carroll was running downfield with the kickoff coverage teams and he was letting the players know what they need to work on.

LenDale White did not dress, he got some work on the stationary bike but that was about it (the feeling is that LenDale is coming along nicely at this point). John Drake was able to practice. Manuel Wright went through some agility drills but for the most part he was on the sidelines with ice on his ankle.

When the three horns sounded to end practice Carroll gathered the team together in the middle of the field and then he had the underclass players form a tunnel line from the field to the exit gate and he had all the seniors run through the tunnel while receiving congratulations from their teammates.

The last player off the field was Shaun Cody after he put in some extra work. On his first practice as a freshman Shaun was forced to do some up-downs as a result of a minor infraction and Shaun wanted to end his career the same way it started so he and Chris Carlisle went to the far end of the field and Carlisle followed as Cody did up-downs the entire length of the field.
