White, a former star running back/safety at Santa Margarita HS, last played in 2002 when he suffered an ACL injury during his senior year and underwent surgery. Ashton had been named the Serra League Player of the Year as a junior and ran for over 3,000 yards in his career. Even after his injury he had scholarship offers from Arizona, UNLV, Colorado State and Kansas but he said it was his dream to play at USC.

"I grew up around USC and have always wanted to play there," White said in January 2003 when deciding on his college future. "I need to figure out the best situation for me. It's nice to have a scholarship, but it would also be nice to go to a place where my leg could heal and that I could earn a scholarship and prove to myself that I can play at USC."
