One of the top running backs in the area next year is expected to be Ken Ashley from Venice, a hard runner who is quick and very tough to bring down. Ashley (5-9, 205) lists the Trojans as the top school on his wish list right now and he will be attending the USC camp next June.

"My running style is a little bit of Barry Sanders with speed and quickness and a lot of power like Emmitt Smith. My mindset with the ball in my hands is to score. It's cool to make people miss or to run over them but I'm just trying to score and win the game. It's not about trying to look good, it's about winning."

I had a chance to see Ashley in action last season in a game against Loyola and was impressed with how hard he was running late in the game when his team was far behind. The outcome had long been decided yet Ken was punishing defenders in the fourth quarter and breaking off long gains. That game was certainly no fluke as he was one of the top rushers in the LA City section with 1,719 yards on 154 carries (11.1 average) along with 23 TD's. Ken also had over 800 yards and 7 TD's as a sophomore at Servite before seeing his season cut short after nine games due to a broen thumb.

"I've been playing football since I was seven years old. I was a fullback at first, then I played a little linebacker but I'm too small for that now. I just play running back because that's what I'll be playing in college."

Ashley grew up in Southern California and considers himself a Dallas Cowboys fan, in part due to Emmitt Smith. He is at the start of the recruiting process and so far has talked with coaches from Mississippi State, Arizona, Cal, Mississippi and Nebraska with offers coming from Ole Miss and Mississippi State. When it comes time to choosing a college, however, Ken will likely stay in-state.

"I'm going to try to stay close to home. The top schools I'm looking at are, of course, USC and also UCLA and Cal. I like USC because everybody there is a winner. It's all about business, they don't let any distractions get in their way. I love the coaching staff, I love everything about there. I've wanted to go to USC since the 9th grade. I just like the Cardinal and Gold. I've watched a lot of tape of Anthony Davis and even had a chance to meet him a couple times. I saw a lot of me in him because we have a similar frame and quickness and vision but everybody is a different player. At UCLA, they have a back similar to me in Maurice Drew and they are close to home. I've had a lot of friends and family who went to Cal and they are a rising star. That offense is great. They have one of the top running backs going in the draft and another great one ready to step in."

Ashley plans to attend the Nike Camp at USC and the USC summer camp in June. One of his off-field interests in drawing and he said he could look to major in something to do with art in college.
