The setting was beautiful on Sunday afternoon for the annual Trojan Huddle scrimmage in front of a gathering that was estimated by school officials at 15,000 fans. Those who were in attendance were treated to a good day of USC football that featured a lot of scoring, both offensively and defensively, and several player performances that stood out.

The day began with the Trojan Marching Band entertaining the crowd as they arrived. By 10:15am the lines to the In-N-Out trucks were already forming but the spirit was high among Trojan fans as they were excited to watch their team in action. One of the first people we saw near the Peristyle entrance was DT commit Gabe Long from Fullerton College and he gave us the good news that he is scheduled to be qualified by the end of the spring semester with plans to begin working out with the team this summer. Long looks to be in good condition and his arrival will be a nice boost to the defensive line in the fall.

The Trojans entered the field around 11:00am and, after a brief warm-up period, the scrimmage began. Thomas Williams set the tone on the opening kickoff when he came down on coverage and lost his helmet on the hit. The first team offense came out and quickly got the ball in the hands of Reggie Bush for the first two plays. On third down John David Booty rolled right and hit Steve Smith along the sideline for a first down. Another Booty completion to William Buchanon set up a short 2nd down run by Bush but Sed Ellis and Oscar Lua were there to hold the play to no gain. Booty then hit David Kirtman who made a juggling catch as he crossed the first down line. A first down run by Chauncey lost three yards thanks to a good play by Dallas Sartz but Booty was able to get ten yards right back with a completion to Smith. On third down Jeff Schweiger came in for a sack.

Hinds brought the 2nd unit out and the first three plays were runs for Chauncey Washington. Rashaad Goodrum and Collin Ashton combined to hold the first run to no gain, the 2nd run went for 9 yards off right tackle behind a block from Deuce Lutui and the third run he picked up a first down before being tripped up by Brandon Ting. Desmond Reed came on and had a short run with Travis Draper and Ashton combining for the stop. Hinds tried to hit Jimmy Miller with a short pass in the flat but Thomas Williams arrived at the same time and jarred the ball loose. Rocky then hit Whitney Lewis who made a good play to pick up ten yards and a first down. Rocky kept the team moving with a 17 yard completion to Chris McFoy who fought off coverage from Jim Abbott. Chris has always been a good blocker and now he's becoming a pretty dependable receiver as well. A penalty negated an eight yard gain by Miller, Travis Tofi stopped a Reed run for a two yard loss and an incomplete pass to Carlson made it 3rd and 17 before a run up the middle from Reed who weaved his way through the defense for a 46 yard gain before being tracked down by Jerry Williams at the eleven yard line. It was a terrific run by Desmond and a nice effort by Williams to run him down. Desmond then took a pitch sweep to the right, bounced off the first tackle and made his way to the two yard line (it was another good bit of running by Desmond). Chauncey then punched it in on the next play and the Danelo extra point made it 7-0.

Bush took a handoff on first down and put a little shake move on the defender as he got outside for ten yards (Lawrence Jackson finally drove him out of bounds). Bush then ran for three yards before Schweiger and Lua combined for the stop. A short Chauncey run set up a 3rd and short so Booty tried to hit Smith with a quick pass but Brandon Ting was able to trip him up before he got the first down.

At this point Tom Malone came out and put on a punting exhibition with the punt team. His first punt sailed about 65 yards, the second one did the same. Tom got huge ovations on both kicks.

Hinds came out and threw a low pass to Brandon Hancock who went down and got the ball for a one yard gain. Rocky went to the air again and hit Nick Vanderboom for ten yards and a first down before a tackle by Keith Rivers. Michael Coleman took a handoff up the middle and got four yards before a tackle by Goodrum. An incomplete pass to Davis was followed by a scramble by Hinds for five yards before Rivers forced him out of bounds. On the next play Coleman fumbled and Goodrum recovered.

The third unit teams came on with Michael McDonald at quarterback of the offense. McDonald wasted no time in hooking up with John Zilka on a 25 yard pass before a tackle by Jerry Williams. Jeff Tola (walk-on DT) came in for a sack. Coleman ran hard through the line and picked up six tough yards with Ryan Powdrell finally making the stop. Coleman once again had to fight through several defenders to pick up three more yards on the next play with Powdrell again making the tackle. Powdrell is showing this spring that he can really play the run well. McDonald hit Zilka for seven yards and a first down before Ryan Ting came over and dropped him with a solid pop. McDonald tried to hit Greig Carlson in the end zone but Jerry Williams knocked the ball away. Another McDonald pass attempt (this time to Lewis) was knocked down in the end zone by Williams. Jerry Williams is a JC walk-on this spring, along with his twin brother, from Highland HS in Palmdale. With the limited corners available at practice to the Trojans right now there has been opportunity for walk-ons like Jerry and he made the most of it today. McDonald missed Lewis on the final play of the drive.

On the opening play of the next possession Booty tried to go deep to Steve Smith but Scott Ware read the play well and came over to get the pick.

Hinds missed McFoy to open the next series but Reed followed that with an excellent run off left tackle for 18 yards. Rocky throw the ball away on the next play and then Chilo Rachal pulled to lead a Reed run that went for eight yards before a tackle by Kevin Ellison. David Kirtman took a handoff but got no gain after being hit hard by Alex Gomez. Danelo made a 35 yard FG.

Booty immediately went to Bush for 27 yards and he was driven out of bounds by Terrell Thomas. Time ran out in the first half. During halftime several fans began gathering in the peristyle end of the Coliseum in order to be among the first in line for player autographs after the scrimmage.

The second half opened with a nice 60 yard KO return by Reed. Desmond sure did look good today. Booty completed a pass to Buchanon for six yards and then a nice catch by Bush for a short gain. Thomas Williams tackled Chauncey for a two yard loss and then Booty hit Smith with a quick out.

Chauncey took a handoff and was absolutely drilled by Powdrell after a short gain. Great hit by Ryan. Right after that Ellison picked off a Hinds pass and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.

On the next drive McDonald hit Kirtman for a 40 yard touchdown.

The first play on the following drive was a nice completion from Hinds to Smith for 17 yards but it was called back due to holding. Ashton stopped Coleman for a short run. Hinds dropped back and threw to the sidelines but Jerry Williams was able to tip the ball and Ryan Ting grabbed it out of the air and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown.

McDonald dropped back on the first play and had great time thanks to a block from Coleman so he was able to step up and hit Lewis for 23 yards. McDonald went right back to Whitney who put a good move on the defender to help gain 27 yards. McDonald then went to Davis who made a nice grab in the end zone for a 19 yard touchdown and it was another nice drive led by the Michael McDonald.

Jackson came in for a sack. Booty went to Bush with a pass and Reggie sprinted down the sidelines for 40 yards before being knocked out of bounds by Josh Pinkard. Booty tried to hit Dale Thompson but Rivers knocked the ball away. Anthony Munoz and Brad Budde are on the sidelines and both look like they could still suit up for the Trojans. Al Cowlings also made an appearance. Rivers came in on the next play for a sack. Chauncey did some good inside running to pick up 13 yards. Booty hit Hancock with a short pass. Chauncey took a handoff inside the five but was met by Powdrell and brought down at the two. Chauncey got the next handoff again up the middle with another solid contact from Powdrell but Washington was able to get into the end zone.

Hinds had a nice swing pass to Hancock before he was tackled by Jerry Williams. Later on the drive Rocky completed an eight yard touchdown pass to Kirtman.

Rashaad Goodrum recovered another fumble. On the final play of the scrimmage Danelo made a 39 yard field goal.
