The USC Trojans got a verbal commitment from Chaffey College tight end Gerald Washington (6-5.5, 253) and he will enroll next January. Click below to learn more about the newest Trojan.

"Yes, I have accepted a scholarship offer to USC," he told "They offered me last Tuesday and I told them I was coming."

Washington is a relative newcomer to football as he has only played the sport for two years. He played in his senior year at Vallejo HS in Northern California and then one year at junior college.

"I was primarily a tennis player growing up," said Washington. "That was my mom's favorite sport and I had a private coach and played in tournaments when I was younger. In my senior year in high school (2000) I decided to go out for football, we were mostly a running team so I only had one catch, it was a 21 yard touchdown catch in our last game. I did play in an all-star game after that year.

Once my senior year was done I went into the Navy for four years where I was a helicopter mechanic. When I got out of the Navy I was getting ready to buy a house but then I thought, I want to give football one more shot. I started looking around and heard a lot of good things about Chaffey College so that's where I ended up."

Last season at Chaffey Gerald had 15 catches, including one touchdown, and he calls himself more of a receiving tight end with his 35" vertical leap and 4.6 speed.

"I'm an all-around athlete but I need to work on getting my stance together, my route running, stuff like that."

The USC coaches, led by Steve Sarkisian, were among the many schools that stopped by Chaffey this spring and once they showed interest in Washington he called the coaches and they started talking about his interest in playing at the next level. Gerald says he doesn't watch football so he didn't know too much about USC but he is excited to be a part of the national championship program.

"Really, the fact that they were national champions is all I knew about USC. I had heard about Mike Williams too but that was about it."

Gerald says he is looking to major in business or communications while at USC.

"I took six classes this semester and I'm in good shape academically. I'll take three more in the summer and then three in the fall and I'll be ready to go in January. I'm excited. I'm always trying to get better, you can always find me at school in my coaches office watching film or something, working on little things. I know I don't have a lot of time to mess around since I'm a little older than some of the other players."
