Spring Ball Day 2

Poston fumbled after a strip by Anthony Daye and recovery by A.J. Single. It was an absolute mad scramble for the ball and one local HS coach who was in attendance said it was the most animated fumble scramble he had ever seen at a spring ball practice. There is an awful lot of energy on the field right now and that should only pick up once the players put the pads on this week.

The Sunday practice started with 20 minutes of work with each individual position coach before the team came together for warm up stretching.

The defensive line was working on run drills with Ed Orgeron playing the role of scout team running back heading into each hole, two players who jumped out again today were Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson as these two young DT's are all over the place. After the stretching drills the scout offense went against the 1st team defense on Brian Kennedy Field. The defense lined up with Nazel, Patterson, Cody and Udeze on the line, Simmons, Pollard and Prosser at linebacker and Rideaux, Arbet, Polamalu and Hill in the secondary. Darryl Poston suffered the wrath of Kennedy Pola after a fumble and he was forced to do a series of up/downs as punishment but Poston has been impressive so far with his ability to hit the hole at full speed without dancing around at the line of scrimmage. David Kirtman had a nice catch and run and Matt Leinart had one solid throw on an out pattern to Sandy Fletcher.

On Howard Jones Field the 1st team offense was running against a skeleton defense and the 1st O featured Carson at QB, Sultan and Pierson at RB, Kareem and Colbert at WR, Holmes at TE and an OL of Rogers, Vandermade, Katnik, Wilson and Torres although we saw some switching up on the line today as well with Katnik getting time at RT and Torres moving to LG with Vandermade at center.

The team was brought together on Kennedy Field for a light scrimmage and things got started with a Sultan run but Melvin Simmons continued to impress as he had a good angle and made the play for no gain. Justin Fargas found a hole for a nice gain which brought Pola screaming from behind the play while encouraging him to run it out. Billy Hart fumbled a handoff to Poston and then Sultan went behind Vandermade, who made a beautiful block on Patterson, and the play went for a long TD. Fargas followed Pierson for a short gain and then Sultan tried a run up the middle but Cody was there for the stop. OL coach Tim Davis stopped the drill to work on the spacing between his center and guards. Patterson had his jersey ripped so he was wearing #93 and nobody was cheering harder for Mike than his old HS teammate Bernard Riley who made sure the number was being represented well. Matt Cassel had a nice scramble when he got to the outside and beat Lee Webb to the corner.

A 7 on 7 passing drill was next and it got started with Leinart hitting Grant Mattos on a nice deep pattern. Matt is showing good velocity on his balls while Mattos is close to being back to the person we saw in fall camp who seemed to catch everything. Leinart then underthrew Keary Colbert and DeShaun Hill read the play for the pick but Matt came right back and threw a solid deep pass to Kareem Kelly which was complete despite good coverage from Marcell Allmond. Carson came in and tried to hit William Buchanan but Allmond knocked the ball away. Marcell then came on a blitz and would've sacked Carson but the play continued and the pass was completed to Jason Mitchell. Mitchell has shown good speed and just needs to be more consistent with his hands but that statement can be applied to all the receivers at this point. As if to prove that point, Carson's next pass to Kareem was dropped and then Cassel threw a nice ball to Fargas that was dropped. Billy Hart tried to throw a pass to Gregg Guenther but Chris Prosser made a terrific play when he batted the ball in the air to himself and came down with the pick. Hart then threw a great deep pass to Buchanan but the ball was dropped and then Billy hit Mitchell on a quick pass for a 12 yard gain. Carson tried to go to Brandon Hancock but Polamalu batted the ball down on a blitz. Carson went right back to Hancock on a beautiful route that was complete for a touchdown and brought LB coach Nick Holt on to the field to talk with Webb who had been beaten on the play. David Davis attempted several kicks, the majority of which were good.

The final drill of the day was an 11 on 11 scrimmage with Carson hitting Colbert despite good coverage from Kevin Arbet. Cody and Udeze combined on the next play for a sack and then Carson hit Mattos on the following play. Carson then rolled out and had a lot of time to throw due to good protection from the line and he hit Doyal Butler for a huge gain. Leinart hit Pierson and then Tim Davis held up the next play to demonstrate the proper blocking angles for how to pick up a safety blitz. Carson then hit Sunny Byrd for a big gain out of the backfield and then Sultan put on a nice move on a run to pick up just a few yards on a play that was going nowhere. Carson went to Byrd but Rideaux read the play well and knocked the ball away before Nazel came in on the next play for a sack on Palmer. Cassel had his most solid throw of the day on a rope to Colbert before Carson followed that with another nice play where he waited until the last second with the rush coming on him before lofting a touch pass to Colbert along the sidelines. Poston fumbled again after a strip by Anthony Daye and recovery by A.J. Single which brought another set of up/downs for Darryl. It was an absolute mad scramble for the ball and one local HS coach who was in attendance said it was the most animated fumble scramble he had ever seen at a spring ball practice. There is an awful lot of energy on the field right now and that should only pick up once the players put the pads on this week. Leinart then tried to hit Kelly but Allmond was very physical off the line of scrimmage with his coverage and he batted the ball away. Allmond could be a great addition to this corner group and there is nobody better to teach him bump coverage than Pete Carroll as Carroll is considered one of the top coaches in the nation on that subject. Pierson tried a run that would have gone for a nice gain but Colbert tripped while trying to make a block and Pierson tripped over Keary's ankle while he was on the ground. Udeze had a sack on Hart to close out the drill.

Among the recruits in attendance today were WR Mark Bradford (Fremont) and QB Tommy Grady (Edison). The recent signees in attendance included Manuel Wright, Justin Wyatt, Chris Doyle and Dallas Sartz. D. Hale had his left arm in a sling and did not practice. Matt Grootegoed did not practice but he was wearing the #6 jersey which was his original HS number.
