Wednesday practice tidbits

Oscar Lua went through practice with the first unit and alternated with Rey Maualuga. Oscar wore a knee brace but seemed to be moving pretty well. Thomas Williams did not practice.

It was a nice day for the offense on Wednesday as quarterback Matt Leinart looked pretty sharp. In the team drill at the end of the practice he hit Steve Smith on several passes including one sharp throw over the middle for a 20 yard gain. Matt also dumped a pass to Reggie Bush and Reggie put a shake move on Keith Rivers that was very impressive. Matt opened the drill with a 15 yard completion along the sideline to Dwayne Jarrett.

A couple other nice plays in the team drill included a sack by Kyle Moore, a strip of Steve Smith after he caught a pass (couldn't see who stripped the ball) and a beautiful pass break-up by Josh Pinkard as Leinart was trying to hit Jarrett on a mid range pass.

Today was a pretty crisp practice, the kind we've become accustomed to seeing in the later stages of the season when the team really gets rolling. There is something about the confidence we see in the players these days which says they are ready to play anybody, anytime, anywhere.

In the service team drill, both John Walker and Kevin Thomas had pass break-ups of balls from Mark Sanchez.

During a punt drill, Brandon Hancock did a good job to hustle and down the ball inside the five yard line.

Mario Danelo made field goals from 42 and 47 yards. Troy Van Blarcom made 1 of 3 kicks from 53 yards out (the one he made had plenty of distance to spare).

Team manager Natasha Godoy got doused with a bucket of Gatorade at the end of practice to celebrate her birthday.
