Thursday practice tidbits

If the Thursday afternoon team drill to end practice is any indication, the Trojans are more than ready to play this weekend against Fresno State.

The session got started with the first team offense going against the second team defense and it was a marvelous display from Matt Leinart. First it was Matt hitting Dwayne Jarrett over the middle with DJ making the grab with outstretched arms. Later it was Leinart rolling out and spotting Patrick Turner dragging across the middle of the field, Matt waited until Patrick found the open spot in the defense and he zipped in a pass for the long gain. The best play came when Matt hit Reggie out of the backfield against coverage from Rey Maualuga, Matt threw a beautiful deep ball which Reggie just ran under as he was five yards behind Rey on the deep streak pattern.

The first team defense then came on and immediately shut down the second team offense. Frostee Rucker did a good job applying pressure to John David Booty and forcing a low thrown ball in the flat to Chris McFoy which fell incomplete. The final play of the drill, and of the practice, ended with Collin Ashton tipping away a pass attempt for Brad Walker.

Much of the practice today was spent with the first units going against the service teams as the coaches reviewed the game plan for the Bulldogs. The team seemed loose and focused, just another day at the office for the Trojans.

Following the warm-ups at the beginning of the day, the offense linemen usually head to the far field to begin their work. Today we saw Chilo Rachal and Brennan Carroll race from the warm-ups to the field with Chilo winning by several yards. To the left of those two, reserve OL John Lanza was beating head coach Pete Carroll in a race to the same field.

There will be two toy drives being held on Saturday at the Coliseum with drop off locations at the Peristyle entrance and at the corner of Menlo and Coliseum. Fans are being asked to bring an unwrapped toy which will be donated to needy kids. Top Stories
