Highly coveted as a quarterback at Pasadena City College, Hervey was recruited to Troy by then new head coach John Robinson, and made the switch to wide receiver with an eye towards a career in professional football. He also found time to run track at USC, earning All-American honors there as a sprinter, finishing fifth in the 200 meters at the 1995 NCAA Track & Field Championships, as well as being on 4x100-meter relay team that included Anthony Volson, Udeme Ekpenyong, and Bryan Krill.
Injuries curtailed his contributions on the football field, though some of his highlights included five catches for 120 yards and a touchdown in a 45-28 win over Arizona as a senior, and then catching three passes for 99 yards in the Trojans' 55-14 demolition of Texas Tech in the 1995 Cotton Bowl.
Picked in the fifth round of the 1995 NFL Draft by Dallas, another injury placed him on the inactive list during the Cowboys' last Super Bowl season. Waived following the season, Hervey spent the next three years in training camps with the Raiders and Broncos, but didn't crack the final roster.
A scout invited him up north to Edmonton, and 2005 marks his seventh year as an Eskimo. Playing in the wide-open Canadian Football League, Hervey has twice earned All-CFL honors, and this year surpassed 400 career receptions. This Sunday, Hervey hopes to lead the "Esks" to their second Grey Cup title in four years.
Though he plays in the Great White North, Hervey still follows the Trojans avidly as they have continued their historic run.
"We've got a lot of Pac-10 guys on the team, and if our alma mater loses, we have to wear the other team's jersey," said Hervey. "Let's just say I haven't had to wear anyone else's jersey in a long time."
