Former USC players killed

Former Trojan defensive lineman Darrell Russell, who played at USC from 94-96 and was the #2 overall pick in the 1997 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders, and former receiver Mike Bastianelli were killed Thursday morning in a car crash in the Los Angeles area.

According to reports, Bastianelli, 29, was driving while Russell, 29, was the passenger in a car that went out of control about 6 a.m. and hit a curb, tree, newsstand, fire hydrant, light pole, another tree and an unoccupied transit bus.

Both Russell and Bastianelli were unconscious when firefighters arrived. Russell died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Bastianelli died at UCLA Medical Center.

Russell was a high school All-American at St. Augustine HS in San Diego and he was a two-time All Pac-10 selection with the Trojans.

Bastianelli was an All-American quarterback in high school at DeLaSalle Hs in Northern California before coming to SC and seeing most of his action as a wide receiver from 1995-98.

Both were members of the 1995 USC team that won the 1996 Rose Bowl against Northwestern.
