Thursday practice tidbits

The intensity and energy of the Trojan practice really picked up in the later half of the practice today, especially as the team began the "team" drills to end the day.

Things got started around 10:45 this morning and the first big play we saw was a big hit on kickoff coverage from Ryan Powdrell. It says something about our depth at linebacker when Powdrell is having a hard time seeing the field but hopefully he can make an impact on special teams in this game.

We saw a new wrinkle during the service team offense drill against the first team defense as Michael Coleman was taking some reps at quarterback to emulate Vince Young. So far we've seen Mark Sanchez and Fred Davis in that role but today it was Coleman doing a lot of the running plays from the QB position.

I stayed on Brian Kennedy Field to watch the linemen one on one drills. Some highlights were a nice stop by Ryan Kalil, Kyle Williams doing a good job against Jeff Schweiger, Chilo Rachal holding off Fili Moala and Chris Barrett bullrushing Charles Brown.

Matt Leinart got the ball rolling in the team drill with a solid completion downfield to Chris McFoy. A couple plays later there was a brief "exchange" between Sed Ellis and Fred Matua which was quickly broken up and the volume level on both sides increased after that point. Frostee Rucker had a nice play where he read a pass to Reggie Bush and he slid down the line of scrimmage to make the play. We saw Thomas Williams at MLB with the 2nd team, Rey Maualuga took some reps during the day but he is nursing a sore left knee and alternated with Williams.

Loyola HS coach Jeff Kearin, a former USC graduate assistant coach, was in attendance after leading the Cubs to a CIF title in his first year at the school.

The team departed for Disneyland immediately following practice.
