Potential impact

Pete Carroll has said that no incoming player is guaranteed to redshirt so here is a look at the new recruits who will be here in the fall and their chances of early playing time.

QB Brandon Hance - Will sit out the season after transferring from Purdue and will compete for the open job in 2003.

RB Hershel Dennis - If qualified it will be tempting to play him and with his talent he would likely contribute but with three seniors and an improved Darryl Poston ahead of him it would be great to redshirt Hershel and save the extra year.

FB Brandon Hancock - Already enrolled for spring ball and looked good during the majority of drills. Has the speed and athletic ability to play immediately and he will see action this fall but needs work on his blocking.

WR Mike Williams - One of the most highly anticipated members of this class and he will play immediately. Carroll has compared him to Keyshawn Johnson "only Mike is three inches taller" and it would be nice if Williams comes anywhere close to matching the exploits of Key while in a Trojan uniform.

WR Jason Mitchell - Already took part in spring drills and showed enough to let us know that he will be part of the receiver rotation.

WR Chris McFoy - Runs terrific routes and is a solid blocker but could benefit from a year under the guidance of Chris Carlisle and will likely redshirt.

TE Dominique Byrd - Talented player has the ability to contribute right away and although this position is 3-deep right now it is likely that Byrd will not redshirt.

OL Winston Justice - Physically ready to compete and that is good news because we need him in the rotation immediately. Remains to be seen how quickly he will adjust to the mental aspect of playing OL at the college level.

OL Fred Matua - Fred will begin his Trojan career on the OL and could see playing time this season.

OL Kyle Williams - The 3rd freshman on the line who isn't expected to redshirt, Kyle is an excellent pass blocker who will begin the season at RT.

OL Chris Doyle - Barring injury to Katnik or Vandermade, Doyle will redshirt at center.

OL Kurt Katnik - Kurt will redshirt this season and hit the weight room.

DL Manuel Wright - If qualified Manuel will step right in to the 2-deep rotation at defensive tackle. Has all the skills necessary to be an impact player from Day One.

DL LaJuan Ramsey - Has terrific potential if qualified but there are a lot of bodies ahead of him so look for a redshirt season.

DL Danny Urquhart - Originally recruited as a linebacker but moved to end to take advantage of his quickness, he is expected to see the field immediately.

DL Van Brown - The coaches brought Van in specifically to compete with Omar Nazel for the open position at end and he will play immediately.

LB Oscar Lua - Not much playing time can be expected behind Pollard and Webb but there are extremely high hopes for the future with Lua and he will play this year both on defense and special teams.

LB Dallas Sartz - Dallas is being moved from safety to linebacker so he will likely redshirt to add weight for the SLB spot.

DB Darnell Bing - If qualified there is little doubt that Bing will see the field early and often. Could be the most talented athlete in the class.

DB Mike Ross - If Mike can earn playing time from Troy Polamalu then by all means he should be on the field. Other than that, look for him to redshirt.

DB Justin Wyatt - Will likely be part of the corner rotation from the start and could also be a key contributor on special teams.

DB Ronnie Nunn - Will play immediately and is expected to compete for a starting job. Attended every spring practice to gain as much information as possible.

P Tom Malone - Based on what we saw in the spring I think it's safe to say that Malone will be our punter in the fall.

K Ryan Kileen - Kileen accepted a scholarship to handle kickoffs and will likely have that role from the start.
