Recruit to watch: CB Clifton Smith

It was two years ago at the Palo Alto Nike camp when CB Clifton Smith of Fresno Edison established himself as one of the top cover men on the West Coast. Despite being a junior, he was tabbed as the top CB of the day after putting on a clinic in the one on one drills. A year later, Mr. Smith has lived up to the high expectations he set as a junior with several sparkling camp performances including this year's Nike camp where he was once again crowed the king of the one on one drills.

Physically, Smith doesn't blow you away, but his cat-like quickness, superb instincts and uncanny feel for the CB position are what separate this elite talent from the rest of the pack. With an uncle who played at USC (former SC great Tim McDonald), the Trojans look to be in great position to land this human blanket. I had an opportunity to speak with Clifton today and here is what he had to say:

WEARESC: Clifton, can you give me a list of your top schools, preferably in order?
CLIFTON: In order, USC, OSU, Fresno St., ASU

WEARESC: So USC is your leader?

WEARESC: Have they offered you?

WEARESC: What would you say are your strengths?
CLIFTON: I would say feet. You can do a lot with your feet, but you gotta have the mental part too. You gotta know what your opponent is doing at all times. You have to know his move before he makes it.

WEARESC: So you think you just have a good sense of what the WRs are doing?

WEARESC: What do you like about USC?
CLIFTON: My uncle (Tim McDonald) used to go there. I just like how it's just cool down there. The people down there are just cool.

WEARESC: So you've visited?
CLIFTON: Yeah, twice.

WEARESC: Have you talked to Coach Carroll?
CLIFTON: Yeah I've talked to him before and he's a real nice guy.

WEARESC: Height, Weight, forty time?
CLIFTON: 5-10, that's with shoes on! 4.4 forty and a 34 inch vertical.

WEARESC: I understand that you also play RB.
CLIFTON: Yeah, I also play on special teams, and I'm the backup QB.

WEARESC: Stats for last season?
CLIFTON: At CB, I had 7 ints. 3TDs. about 80 tackles and a lot of tips. At RB I had around 1300 yards, 19TDs and I don't know how many carries I had.

WEARESC: Do you think you can compare yourself with Aaron Miller for me?
CLIFTON: Sure, Aaron is more of a cover type corner, one who likes to play off of you to make plays. Me, I'm more of an in your face, bump-type corner, more physical.

WEARESC: What else are you going to be doing this summer?
CLIFTON: Summer school and playing baseball.

WEARESC: What position do you pl.ay in baseball?
CLIFTON: I play centerfield.

WEARESC: How are your academics coming along?
CLIFTON: A lot better. Right now, I'm just doing summer school, and I really haven't' thought about the SAT's yet. Top Stories
