Camp report

The Trojans began their annual football camp today with 340 attendees, the largest for any USC camp, and the players went through an introduction session before heading to an afternoon workout on Howard Jones Field.

The introduction session was held in the Lyon Center as Head Coach Pete Carroll welcomed the campers and told them a little about what was going to happen at the camp and what it meant to be a Trojan football player. Carroll was followed by speakers such as Kennedy Pola, Ed Orgeron, Tim Davis and Nick Holt who all gave inspiring talks and got the group ready for action. Carroll ended the talk by talking about the passion shown by the coaches in their speeches (Pola was especially impressive) and how that passion would be evident in everything that took place during the camp.

The campers then headed to the field to go through drills that measured them in height/weight, 40, 20 yard shuttle and vertical leap. Following the measurement drills the campers were broken up into several groups for a session of Trojan Ball, a loosely organized game of 11 on 11 which allowed for multiple passes on each play from in front of or behind the line of scrimmage, and the kids clearly seemed to be enjoying themselves.

There will be more intensive drills for the next 3 days so we will certainly be able to evaluate more after that time but as of today the following players caught our eye:

QB Kyle Wright (Monte Vista HS) - no surprise here, Wright is considered the top QB in the country and he measured in at 6'3" and 3/4, 192 lbs and ran a 4.67 in the 40. Kyle has bulked up and it is clear that his relationship with Pete Carroll is a special one that will hopefully help to land this talented player for the Trojans.

DB Shannon Sevor (Bellarmine HS) - Keep an eye on Sevor as a corner recruit for the Trojans. Ran a 4.55 in the 40 and made some nice plays in the Trojan Ball games.

LB Greg Van Heusen (Saratoga HS) - A physical player with size (approx 6'2, 225), Greg ran a 4.89 in the 40 which isn't ideal but he fits the bill of a linebacker and was receiving a lot of attention from the Trojan coaches.

LB Russell McKittrick (San Marcos HS) - Very agile player who is approx 6'3", 210 and showed good instincts.

LB H.B. Blades (Plantation HS) - Blades is considered one of the top linebackers in Florida and his flight arrived just in time to get him on the field for the drills. He looked to be approaching 230 lbs and is no more than 5'11" if not 5'10" so it will be interesting to see how he fares tomorrow in the field drills.

Ath Marcus Johnson (Locke HS) - Johnson plays QB at Locke but would likely be recruited by the Trojans as a safety or wide receiver.

DB Chris Clark (Cathredal HS) - won the fastest man drill which was held following the 40 yard dash competion.

DL Ronnie Strait (Salesian) - At 6'3", 260 he definitely looks the part but we will need to see how he performs in the drills.

Others included:

LB Philip Rauscher (La Costa Canyon)
LB John Nichols (Bellflower)
TE Evan Moore (Brea)
LB Jimmy Stevens (Bishop Montgomery)
