Trojans offer Gilchrist

High Point (N.C.) cornerback/wide receiver Marcus Gilchrist (5-11, 170, 4.45) can add USC to his list of offers. The T Wingate Andrews High prospect said he also has offers from North Carolina State, Tennessee, Clemson, Duke, Notre Dame, Michigan, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, East Carolina, Michigan State and Florida.

"I got my offer from USC this week for cornerback," Gilchrist said. "Coach (Todd) McNair offered me, then he put me on the phone with Coach (Pete) Carroll who told me he's sending the offer in the mail this week. Coach McNair was here last Tuesday to check me out.

"USC is definitely somewhere I have to think about really seriously. I'm not sure about taking a visit yet. We'll have to see how things pan out."

Gilchrist said that a big part of his decision will be what school has his major. "I want to major in computer engineering, so I'm looking at what schools offer the best program in that. I'm also looking for stability. I want to make sure the coaching staff isn't going anywhere. I'd like to go someplace I could see some early play time too.

"Right now I don't have any favorites," he said. "I want to make sure I know everything I need to before I narrow things down. I want to commit by the end of summer, before next season. I really don't want to worry about all of this during football."

Gilchrist said his strength is his versatility. "I move all around the corner. I'm big on reading the ball and I know when to play it safe and when to take chances. I think everybody has room to improve. With me, I want to be a little better at my coverage."

Final junior (11-4) stats: 40 tackles/11 interceptions; 11 TDs (3 punt return/3 kick return/2 interception returns/1 receiving/2 rushing)

Bench: 275/squat: 350/power clean: 240

Gilchrist reports a 3.6 GPA/SAT result unrevealed.
