Tuesday practice report

There was a new energy on campus as the Trojans hit the field today for the first full pads practice after the start of fall classes. Today also marked the start of game preparation for Arkansas.

One of the first people we saw coming on the practice field was Chauncey Washington and he was wearing shoulder pads and shorts after having not been cleared for contact today. After a few minutes of practice, Chauncey left the field and re-appeared shortly after that in full uniform. The team was doing a run drill on Brian Kennedy Field so Chauncey came over and tried to get into the huddle but the coaches didn't let him go. Later in the day, Chauncey put a blackshirt jersey on (which meant no contact) and he was able to take some reps during the offensive drills against the service team defense. On his first carry, Chauncey went to the right side and he was able to get going a little bit but then he slowed down as he went out of bounds. Chauncey later described it as being able to hit 1st and 2nd gear but he could tell the leg didn't want to go to 3rd gear yet so he didn't try. He took a couple more handoffs later in the day but that was it. After practice Chauncey said the hamstring didn't feel that bad, he just didn't want to take a chance on pushing it too much.

We saw Desmond Reed get a lot of work against the service team and Michael Coleman got a few carries as well but for the most part it was Moody, Gable and Bradford getting the RB work. Bradford, in particular, looked good today. Stafon Johnson worked with the scout team offense against the first team defense.

Kevin Thomas is back in action and it should be quite a competition for the starting corner spot opposite Terrell Thomas as Kevin and Cary Harris are both fighting for the spot. It is good to have a rotation at corner if both guys are similar in talent level because that is a spot where guys can get winded so it's good to rotate and have fresher legs at the end of a game.

Ryan Kalil left the practice field, it looked like he got hit or poked in his eye area, while Jimmy Miller sat out practice with his arm in a sling.

We did see a lot of Fred Davis and that was a welcome sight after Fred had missed some practice time during camp. He got a lot of work today, including a deep pass over the middle from Sanchez.

Other highlights from the day:

* Josh Pinkard had a big pop on Moody.

* Kyle Moore tracked down Bradford on a pitch play to the far side

* Moody had a nice run into the secondary thanks to a block from Stanley Havili.

* Booty completed a skinny post pass to Dwayne Jarrett

* Booty threw a hard ball to Vidal Hazelton, it was low because that was the only open spot to throw it and Vidal went down to make the grab for a 15 yard gain.

* Greg Woidneck had a very good day punting the ball.
