After that the offense and defense split to work against the service team. Stafon Johnson continued to work on the service team offense against the first defense and there isn't much room to go against that defense. The service team struggled for much of the day to get things going but that isn't a surprise when facing this group. Kaluka Maiava had a pick while Oscar Lua just missed one as the ball slipped out of his hands. As for the 1st offense, they had some good plays against the service D. Desmond Reed got some work early and he looked solid, we also saw a nice Allen Bradford run up the middle. Mark Sanchez hit Travon Patterson with a crossing route, John David Booty had good completions to Havili in the flat, Brad Walker on a post and Steve Smith in the back of the end zone. We also saw Dwayne Jarrett getting a lot of reps and it's clear the impact he has on our passing attack when he is out there. Dwayne sat out a good part of camp with his bruised quad but this marks the second day in a row we've seen him out there playing well.
David Buehler made a 47 yard field goal and then barely missed a 52 yard kick.
The team drills to end the day featured some fine play by Steve Smith as he was a favorite target of Booty today. They hooked up on the first couple plays of the drill to get things started right. Booty hit Anthony McCoy over the middle and the freshman made a nice grab after the ball almost slipped through his hands. Sanchez came in and hit Fred Davis who pulled away from Taylor Mays as he caught the ball. Patrick Turner caught a slant pass. An impressive block came from Sam Baker who pulled on a Moody run and gave Dallas Sartz a solid block, Dallas patted Sam on the helmet on the way back to the huddle to acknowledge the effort. Booty threw a screen to Reed who made Kevin Thomas miss before gaining extra yardage. Sanchez hit Chris McFoy in the flat as Chris returned to action after missing the past few days. Alex Morrow had a sack. Moody had a nice run where he changed direction at the line to go up the middle.
Chauncey, Thomas Williams and Jimmy Miller did not practice. Lawrence Miles didn't practice either (shoulder) but it was the first time we've seen Lawrence at a practice this fall.
Former Trojan QB John Mazur, who was honored as part of the 1981 team at Salute to Troy last week, was in attendance.
