Tuesday practice report

There were a lot of new looks today on defense, not only from the loss of Sedrick Ellis but midway through the day Kevin Ellison left the field with a hyperextended knee which caused more shuffling in the secondary.

It was learned today that Ellis is expected to be out at least two weeks so we saw a few different looks on the defensive line with the majority of snaps going to a line that featured Lawrence Jackson, Fili Moala, Chris Barrett and Brian Cushing. You hate to lose a player like Ellis for any length of time but Moala is a veteran player who has performed well so far this season and now is his opportunity.

When Ellison went down, we saw Mozique McCurtis take the majority of reps alongside Taylor Mays, who himself was recently inserted into the starting line-up after the season ending injury to Josh Pinkard. The early word on Ellison is that the injury is not expected to be serious, he will likely return either tomorrow or Thursday. During the service team drills against the first defense, Pete Carroll could often be seen pulling Mays or McCurtis aside for some quick pointers.

Chauncey Washington took some snaps today in full pads and that was nice to see. There was no noticeable limp, hopefully he will be able to go hard again tomorrow to help get ready for Saturday. We also saw some terrific running from the freshmen as Gable and Moody both had some nice runs but it was Allen Bradford who provided the highlight play when he ran through a tackle attempt by Mays and put the defender on his back. Gable also had a run where he put his shoulder into Keith Rivers and Rivers was knocked backwards. After both plays, running back coach Todd McNair was extremely fired up. Moody took a few hard hits from an inspired service team defense. The service team also tried several blitz packages to see how the freshmen were picking them up and it looked like Stafon Johnson was doing a pretty good job. Michael Coleman was dressed in his jersey but no pads.

John David Booty completed a long TD pass to Steve Smith against the service team D. Derek Simmons knocked down a Mark Sanchez pass at the line.

In a skeleton passing drill, Booty lofted a pretty pass to Moody against very good coverage from Clay Matthews. Luthur Brown later dropped what should have been a pick.

In the linemen one on one drills, the offensive line pretty well handled the d-line today.

In the team drills, Booty was picked on the first play of the day and then he came right back and completed a deep ball. Moody had an impressive run off the left side. Jeff Schweiger had a nice tackle to prevent Stafon from breaking off a long gain. Sanchez completed a pass to Patrick Turner who took a big hit from Vincent Joseph. On the final play of the day Booty threw a little low on a deep pass to Travon Patterson but Travon went down to get it for the completion.
