Wednesday practice report

It was Turnover Wednesday on the Trojan practice field and the team had what was, for the most part, a very spirited day of work. At the end of the day, however, yet another player (Ryan Kalil) left practice and sat out the rest of the day due to injury.

Kalil apparently got "dinged" on a play during the team situation drill which is held at the end of each practice and was held out the rest of the day. The trainers will wait until tomorrow before making a final determination on what happened, according to school officials. Nick Howell came in and took over the center role for the remainder of the practice and Drew Radovich was also spotted taking some practice snaps.

Kevin Ellison did not dress today and wore a brace on his left knee as he attended practice. Kevin Thomas did not practice either. We saw Antwine Perez get the majority of snaps with the first team today at strong safety with Taylor Mays at free safety. When we worked on nickel packages, Mozique McCurtis was getting a lot of looks as the slot defender. Shareece Wright was also dressed after sitting out yesterday with a hip problem that occured on Monday. Will Harris and Hershel Dennis attended practice.

There was some potential good news on the defensive line as well. Travis Tofi walked on the field without a boot on his foot for the first time since early in fall camp and he said he is scheduled to return to practice next week. Tofi could be a solid addition to the defensive line as an experienced reserve who can play all four spots if needed. He missed time in spring ball and fall camp with a stress fracture in his foot.

In the run drill on Brian Kennedy Field, Desmond Reed got things going with a 15 yard run up the middle. The defense was really fired up today after the coaches had spent the entire warm-up period reminding them of the importance of Turnover Wednesday. They were trying to strip every ball possible but the running backs did a real good job of holding on. Allen Bradford broke a long touchdown run through a big hole off right guard (Chilo Rachal and Ryan Kalil on the block). Stafon Johnson took a handoff and put a move on Kaluka Maiava at the line which made Kaluka miss and Stafon went on for a 17 yard run. Coach Norton didn't like one of his players missing a tackle and he let Kaluka know it. Thomas Williams had a nice stop at the line on C.J. Gable. Desmond took a handoff on the next play and as Kaluka came up to make the tackle he completely wrapped Desmond up with a sure tackle. Norton made sure to give Kaluka some praise for the effort.

During the first team defense work against the scout team, we saw David Buehler and Garrett Green getting work as the 2nd unit at safety, Vincent Joseph and Shareece Wright as the 2nd unit corners, Kaluka Maiava, Thomas Williams and Clay Matthews as 2nd unit linebackers and Alex Morrow, Chris Barrett, Averell Spicer and Kyle Moore as the 2nd unit d-line. The best play by the scout offense was a pass from Mike McDonald to David Ausberry along the sideline for about a 20 yard gain.

During the team drill, John David Booty got things started by hitting Dwayne Jarrett along the sideline for 17 yards. Dwayne got a lot of work today. Cary Harris knocked down a pass along the sideline intended for Travon Patterson. Booty threw a quick strike to Stanley Havili who scooted through the defense for a nice gain, Havili really does look like Malaefou MacKenzie at times. At that point we noticed Kalil behind the huddle with the trainers looking at him. Ryan was on his feet shortly after that and was seen walking around for the rest of the day but he did not go back into the drill. Lawrence Jackson had a sack. One of the best plays of the day came when Mark Sanchez hit Patterson who made one guy miss with a stop and go move and then he shifted quickly into gear to gain 18 yards. Practice ended shortly after that. Top Stories
