Recruit to watch: OL Joe Thomas

WeAreSC.com spoke with multi-talented prospect Joe Thomas from Brookfield Central High School in Brookfield Wisconsin, which is a suburb of Milwaukee. He is busy preparing for the upcoming season, but had the following update.

Joe Thomas has the size and athletic ability that have made him a recruit schools across the nation are interested in. He is 6'8", 265 pounds, and runs a 4.78 forty, which was quick enough to make him the fastest linemen at the Notre Dame camp he attended earlier this year. He was also voted the top lineman in attendance for that camp. Thomas squats 500 pounds, benches a max of 350 pounds, and has a 29 and a half/inch vertical, which comes in handy as Joe also averages a double/double (points/rebounds) playing power forward in basketball. In addition, he has an interest in participating in Track and Field at the college he chooses as Thomas is an All-American shot putter.

Thomas has several offers to choose from but is mainly looking at USC, Wisconsin, Colorado, Notre Dame, and Purdue. He does not have a favorite from those five and will be taking all of his trips. USC will most likely get one of those trip's as Joe would like to check out the school, and the Los Angeles area, as he has not been out to Southern California before. The USC coach recruiting Thomas is Tim Davis. His parents would prefer him to stay in the Midwest, but will support any college decision he makes. He expects to make a decision in January.

When asked what he considers his strengths as a player, Thomas mentioned his speed and agility for a lineman his size, as he prides himself in being explosive off the line, and at the point of attack. As one can gather, Joe really enjoys run blocking. He did say he wanted to continue to work on his blocking techniques to become a better lineman. Joe played fullback and tight end on offense last season racking up 22 receptions, 7 touchdowns, and 250 rushing yards. On defense, he played outside linebacker, defensive end, and defensive tackle amassing 80 tackles and 6 sacks. Joe's duties did not end there as he also handled kick-offs and was his team's punter. Joe is a four-year varsity starter. He wears #41.

Even though Joe has played AAU basketball and has been recruited to play hoops in college, he does not really have an interest to do so, as he said he would like to concentrate on playing football. Currently, Thomas is fully qualified as he scored a 1200 on his SAT, and has a 3.5 GPA. Joe would like to major in business in college.
