Tuesday practice report

The Trojans got in a good offensive workout on Tuesday with a lot of attention paid to the deep passing game.

There was one stretch at the beginning of the service team drills where John David Booty went deep with four straight balls and the one thing that was noticeable was how much air John David was putting on his throws. In the past, he may have thrown the balls more on a rope but today he was putting a lot of arch on the ball with good success. His first throw was a deep out to Travon Patterson, complete along the sideline. Next came one down the middle to Dwayne Jarrett, another completion, and then a deep ball to Patterson, complete again. His first miss came on the next play which was a deep pass to Anthony McCoy and Booty simply zipped it too much as compared to his earlier throws. Later in the drill he completed another deep ball to Jarrett that may have been his best throw of the day, he just aired it out and let the receiver run under it for the long touchdown. Patterson also caught a quick hitch from Mark Sanchez and that is a play that can work with the speedy and elusive Patterson.

We also saw Allen Bradford get work today with both the service team and the first unit offense at fullback. On his first play with the first unit, he was the lead blocker on a run by Chauncey off the right side. Todd McNair was seen working with Bradford on proper positioning of blocks and later Allen got a chance to carry the ball with a nice run off left guard. Chauncey also added a long run in the drill.

In the team drill, we saw Booty get things going by hitting Patrick Turner for 10 yards. A Booty to Fred Davis pass picked up good yardage, nice to see Fred break a run into the secondary. Mozique McCurtis had a pass break-up of a Sanchez pass that was intended for Travon. Sanchez then tried to hit Brad Walker with a quick slant but Antwine Perez was there with the hit of the day, to his credit Walker hung on to the ball after the hard smack. Emmanuel Moody took a handoff and tried to get around the left end but Clay Matthews was there to drag him down for a one yard loss. A couple plays later Moody had the prettiest run of the day when he headed left and then cut on a dime back toward the middle of the field where he ran free for 27 yards.

* Mike Brittingham had a huge block during the RB/LB drills that got his offensive teammates fired up.

* Steve Smith did not practice today, nor did Oscar Lua or Luthur Brown. Stanley Havili was in attendance and he was walking without crutches. Desmond Reed was not in attendance, we saw Travon Patterson, Vidal Hazelton and Stafon Johnson get the majority of punt return work.

* Chilo Rachal was back at practice working with the first team at RG.

* Nick Howell got doused with water after practice in honor of his birthday. Happy 20th Nick.
