Thursday practice report

The Trojans held their annual "Black Shirt" scrimmage Thursday afternoon, as the third team and scout team got in some extra work in a game situation.

The practice began with everyone going through drills. During a blocking drill that had the linebackers matched up against the running backs, the most impressive play came courtesy of Clay Matthews Jr. as he steamrolled Desmond Reed on his way to the quarterback. Allen Bradford's performance during this drill was interesting to watch, as he was solid going against both Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga.

During a run drill on Brian Kennedy field, the highlight came from Emmanuel Moody as he ripped off a long run over the left side. He continued his good day back on Howard Jones field as he ran for a big gain behind right guard Thomas Herring on a sweep to the right.

Patrick Turner had a nice day, catching everything thrown his way and looking very clean while doing so. His routes were sharp and I didn't see him bobble a single ball.

As for the scrimmage, Allen Bradford and Stafon Johnson were the offensive stars while Michael Morgan stepped up for the defense. Michael McDonald got the scrimmage off to a start by hitting Vidal Hazelton in the flat for a short gain.

Bradford provided most of the offense on the drive with a huge run down the right sideline. After that, McDonald ran for a three-yard touchdown, to the complaints of defenders.

The next drive saw Stafon Johnson carry the ball several times for positive yards. His best run was a fourteen-yarder where he escaped several tackles. After that, he had a four-yard run where he was met in the hole by Morgan. There have been rumblings that Morgan is weighing in at 213 lbs., which is up 27 pounds from when he first checked in at USC.

Bradford finished that second drive with the play of the day, a forty-yard touchdown run where he started down the right sideline, cut back across the field and beat Jamel Williams to the left corner of the end zone.

On the next drive, the day's final touchdown came on a thirty one-yard pass from Tyler Davis to Spencer Vigoren.

On the final play of the day the offense set up for a fourth and one, which saw the defense stuff Stafon Johnson for no gain.

Several notables were in attendance. Will Harris showed up wearing his #26 jersey for the first time that I'd seen.

Ryan Powdrell also was in attendance, though he was riding a scooter for mobility.

And with the Saints having a bye week, Reggie Bush took in Thursday's practice. Top Stories
