"My heart was pounding," said Jones of the scholarship offer from USC. "I mean I've seen some of the greatest athletes come out of there (USC). Those are my idols too, and it's crazy to think that USC offered me a scholarship. When I go back to school everyone will be talking about it, its great."
The Compton standout is seen as one of the top prospects in Southern California, but even he didn't expect the two local schools to get involved.
"I'm not really sure how the offer came about, but I know I am very excited," Jones said. "I wasn't expecting UCLA of USC to offer, because they didn't offer our two big guys last year. Porter Hill and Anthony Wright were both incredible guys, it was just a shock to me."
Jones recently made the short trip to USC for the Junior Meet and Greet, and will make another trip across town this Friday to meet with Coach Carroll and staff.
"I'm heading up to SC on Friday at around 1:30 or so," said Jones of his plans. "I'm going to meet with Coach Carroll and some of the defensive staff, and just get a feel for everything."
The talented pass rusher had planned on making a Signing Day decision, but did admit however that the USC offer did make him think about ending it early.
"I was on the verge of committing to USC," confessed Jones. "But I'm going to look at what benefits me the most. I'm not ruling out the possibility of committing early, but I need to see what's out there."
With the recruiting process starting earlier and earlier, most prospects have a top list of schools, but Jones insists that he is open to anyone and everyone who is interested in him.
"I used to have favorites," answered Jones. "But now the coaches have wiped out my head. I'm open to the public."
Even though Jones is "open to the public," he did have time to say what stood out to him about the University of Southern California.
"I know they (USC) have great academics and football," said Jones. "I know that they are on tv every week, for football and basketball. Those are both my favorite sports, so what else could I ask for."
When asked whether or not he would consider basketball as an option in college, Jones' answer was short and to the point.
"I'm not to sure about basketball, I'm thinking more toward football. I also run track in the off-season."
Even though Jones confessed to nearly committing to USC, he did mention his plans on making a decision, which may come as a surprise.
"I plan on announcing Signing Day, I think I'm going to wait it out."
Regardless of whether or not Jones pulls the trigger before Signing Day, he is definitely a player to keep a watchful eye on. Jones will attend the Nike Camp at USC, and is looking forward to one event in particular.
"I'm really looking forward to the forty-yard dash," confessed Jones. "I'm hoping to run a 4.6 or 4.7."
