Spring Ball Day 2

It was another good practice today as the Trojans continue to look sharp in the early goings of spring practice

One onlooker described the energy around practice as being "fresh" which is a good word to use, it's also somewhat surprising to use a word like that considering we have such a veteran team but there is also a nice mix of guys who are looking to make their mark. Regardless, the positive feeling this spring has been noticeable.

On Tuesday it was the passing game which took center stage but today we saw a lot of good work from the running backs including Chauncey Washington and Allen Bradford with long touchdowns on the day. The touchdown by Chauncey came during the run drill on Brian Kennedy Field when Chauncey went off right guard and sprinted into the secondary for the long score. Chauncey looks as good as we've seen from him in recent years. C.J. Gable was forced to run a penalty lap after a fumble during the run drill. Derek Simmons jumped out with a nice play where he fought off a block and tackled Emmanuel Moody behind the line of scrimmage. Simmons also performed well in one on one drills.

Another lineman who looked good today was Thomas Herring, who is lining up at right guard these days behind Chilo Rachal. Thomas absolutely buried Lawrence Miles during the one on one drills and he is looking more and more like a football player with each practice. Thomas is in good shape and his natural athleticism is starting to shine through.

In the team drills, things got started with John David Booty throwing to Travon Patterson, Cary Harris went for the pick and didn't get it which allowed Travon to sprint 40 yards untouched for a touchdown. Bradford got his touchdown a few plays later when Mark Sanchez hit him with a quick pass and Allen ran hard down the sideline with Vincent Joseph in pursuit but it wasn't enough as Allen was able to reach the end zone. Derek Simmons had a nice tackle on Chauncey. Brian Cushing left the field with what appeared to be a hamstring and his replacement, Clay Matthews, had an interception a few plays later. Garrett Green had a deep completion over the middle to Dale Thompson. Green looks very comfortable leading an offense and he got inside the five with a pass to Patrick Turner (Luthur Brown drove him out of bounds) before settling for a David Buehler field goal.

The OL rotation today was as follows: LT – Baker, Lewis LG – Byers, Malu C Howell, Spanos RG Rachal, Herring RT Radovich, Brown

Damian Williams and Jamere Holland did not practice today.

Aaron Corp, Michael Reardon and Da'John Harris were at practice.

The Sunday practice is scheduled for 11:00am. It will be full pads that day.
