Tuesday practice report

Today was the most work we've seen from Hershel Dennis this spring and it was so good to see #34 out there looking strong. If you didn't know any better, you would never have guessed that he has missed the last two seasons due to knee injury, he was out there making cuts and showing moves that flashed glimpses of the old HD.

We won't make too much of his performance for one day but it was certainly nice to see him back out there in action. The coaches are working Hershel back in slowly as his knee continues to rehab so it remains to be seen how much work he will get the remainder of spring.

We saw some rotation at center today as, for the first time this spring, all three centers (Nick Howell, Matt Spanos and Jeff Byers) got extensive work during drills. The coaches were clearly not happy with the fact that the ball was on the ground a few times during the Sunday scrimmage and they made that point known today.

Stanley Havili did not take part in practice due to a sternum injury so we saw walk-on Cooper Stephenson get a few looks and Cooper made the most of it including a nice long gainer down the right sideline where he was helped by a block from David Ausberry. Speaking of Ausberry, David had a big play toward the end of the day when he caught a pass in the open field from John David Booty with nobody around him and rambled for 30 yards. It's an impressive sight to see the big man running full speed like that down the field. One of the things I definitely like seeing from Sarkisian so far is that we seem to be doing a good job of getting the ball to our skill players on the move and letting them make plays with the ball in their hands.

Fred Davis caught a nice pass over the middle from Booty….Travon Patterson caught a short pass with Keith Rivers hanging on to his shorts, the shorts ripped and Travon went running toward the end zone while Keith threw the patch of ripped shorts to the ground…..C.J. Gable had a nice run in the team drill…..Desmond Reed had a touchdown run during a drill on Brian Kennedy Field where he ran over a tackle attempt in the secondary by Brent Yoshida. Brent has had his share of collisions in the last two practices…..Thomas Herring got a bear hug from Pat Ruel after his block on the final play of the run drill….Patrick Turner caught a swing pass in the open field and ran for good yardage to open the skeleton passing drill…. All students will be admitted free to the Trojan Huddle on Saturday with a valid student ID card.

There will be an in-depth spring ball feature shown during the Lexus Gauntlet show on Prime Ticket this week. Air dates are as follows:

Wednesday, 10:30pm
Thursday, 9:30am
Friday, 4:00pm
