Kyle Johnson recruit update

Norco (Calif.) offensive tackle Kyle Johnson (6-7, 280) has been part of one of the most vaunted running games in California over the past few years.

The mammoth offensive tackle started for the Cougars in 2006, when they won their second consecutive CIF-SS title and had a back go over 2,000 yards again.

With Adam Tello and Garth Gerhart gone, headed to Arizona State, Johnson is poised to be the leader of the line for the Cougars and the Sun Devils have made an impression on Johnson.

"Arizona State, Colorado and San Diego State have all offered me," said Johnson. "I'm leaning towards Arizona State because of Adam and Garth."

The two local schools, USC and UCLA, have also been keeping tabs on Johnson.

"I went to USC's Spring Game on Saturday and talked with some of the coaches. Coach Watson is the one recruiting me. I haven't talked with Jordan (Campbell) to much about it but said he's been telling the coaches that they need to offer me," said Johnson. "I've been talking with UCLA a little bit and they said they wanted to see my semester grades before they offered."

And though the Sun Devils lead, if either of the two L.A. schools offered, Johnson said that would put them right their in the ix.

"I think it would really put them both up there if they offered me," said Johnson. "I don't want to make an early decision. I want to be able to take some time and see what my options are before I make my decision. I had been thinking about it (an early decision) but I don't want to rush it."

At 280, Johnson said his goal is to be up to 300 by the time the season starts.

"I'll be up to 300 before the season, but I want to keep my speed and not lose it," said Johnson.

Johnson said he will likely be at the Combine later this month and the Stanford Nike Camp in May.

Academically, Johnson has a 2.8 GPA and will take the SAT in June. Top Stories
