USC offers Matt Barkley

Mater Dei QB Matt Barkley was offered a verbal scholarship last night by USC head coach Pete Carroll during a meeting at Heritage Hall with Matt and his parents.

Barkley is considered one of the prize quarterbacks for the Class of 2009 and he already had offers from schools such as Colorado, Florida State, Washington, Stanford and Cal. All of the offers are verbal since Matt cannot be officially offered a scholarship until September due to NCAA rules.

Barkley has been well known in Southern California high school football circles since winning the Mater Dei quarterback job as a freshman. He broke his collarbone toward the end of his freshman year but still passed for 1,685 yards on 126-of-220 passing and 10 touchdown passes. As a sophomore, Matt threw for 1,349 yards and 11 touchdowns while being named a 1st team all-state sophomore. He was particularly impressive leading his team during fourth quarter comebacks against top schools such as Mission Viejo, Orange Lutheran and Servite before losing in the first round of the playoffs against a tough LB Poly squad.

We'll talk with Matt tonight to get his thoughts on the most recent offer.
