Tyron Smith Commits To USC

Tyron Smith verbally committed to USC this morning. The only surprising aspect of his commitment is he didn't wait until after the Rising Stars Camp.

Three weeks ago Tyron Smith told WeAreSC he would announce his commitment after attending camps at Arizona, UNLV and USC. However, Smith didn't wait until after the Rising Stars Camp at USC, he informed the coaches he waqs a Trojan before the camp.

"I told them (USC) this morning I was committing," Smith said. "They were yelling and very excited when I told them. Coach (Pete) Carroll welcomed me to the family and told me it was great to have me."

Smith decided to verbally commit to USC early in the recruiting process for a couple of reasons. "I like the winning tradition at USC and I wanted to get my commitment out of the way so I can focus on the football season," Smith said

After each camp Smith has attended, there's been a buzz about how dominating he was. We asked what he thought of his latest camp performance.

"I think I did better than most of the guys there," Smith said. "I think this camp was more competitive than the others camps I've attended. The other camps may have had more players, but this camp was more competitive."

The recruiting services have Smith listed as an offensive tackle, but in the past the Trojans told Smith they liked him as guard prospect. However, Smith told us today he believes he's a tackle prospect for USC, and that's his preferred position.

WeAreSC will continue to cover Smith when Rancho Verde begins its summer workouts next month.
